The Second volume of Artlover contains numbers one through nine. The issues were of slightly different size, the front and rear wrappers of issue one are bound in but the others contain only the inner pages. Appears however to be the original publisher's binding. TEXT FROM ISSUE NINE READS: In introducing this collection of "Artlovers" in book form to the art-loving public in America and abroad, it is our intention to reveal the underlying philosophy that has motivated our activity in collecting and exhibiting works of art. This second volume (the first published in Berlin, 1923) is the result of work begun in 1906, ever guided by the thought, "Ars una species mille". We have consistently sought the essential quality, that strain of aesthetic verity, that permeates every true work of art, be it primitive negro sculpture, wood-cuts of the Middle Ages, or modern contemporary painting, and have chosen our material and arranged our exhibitions to reveal that continuity and homogeneity. At no time have we been content to pander to tradition or fashion, regardless of whether these spurious forms of appreciation have, now and then by chance, aligned themselves with art movements of value. Every decision, every action, has been directed by one fundamental concern - recognition of the duty incumbent upon all to adhere to the principle that there is but one art, that modernity or antiquity in itself neither makes nor destroys it. Rightly chosen works of art accumulate value with the passage of time and the patron who gathers the meritorious products of his contemporaries invests in solid stock. But it is not for this canny wisdom that the collector deserves praise but for his love of beauty and his activity as an artist: - for the creation of a collection is in the nature of the creation of a work of art. Money may buy pictures, but appreciation and taste alone can make a collection of worth. Every canvas, every piece of sculpture, their arrangement, discloses the directing spirit of the creator. The integrity of perception of such men, who, in the face of conservative obliquity, have purchased paintings of the real artists because they loved them and not because of official approval, can never be overestimated. To the man who is interested in art come the greatest riches. His is the wealth of museums, - a wealth that would outdo his capacity for private ownership. To increase his wealth, and by subtle alchemy transform it from the great riches of acquisition to the greater riches of benefaction, is to participate in the creative spirit of our own time: to aid in the establishment in our generation of collections which shall be at once of our time and timeless, a reflection of our lives, and an artistic heritage for the future. An increasingly awakened artistic feeling in the community improves and broadens the life of the community. We wish to be one in the effort to attain that cultural state where everyone will take part in the life of art that it may become, as it will then become, an art of life. Inevitably comes the realization that art can be promoted only with a complete unselfishness. The gallery becomes a shut room, enclosing the collection from all save casual visitors, a few lovers of art, and a selected list of patrons. The gallery idea in its selectivity and seclusion gives way to the desire to satisfy a more universal hunger. The individual gives place to the public. To this end the New Art Circle has. decided to incorporate into a public institution devoted to the stimulation and dissemination of the lasting in art. J. B. Neumann.
