Preoccupation with adolescence was one of the hallmarks of European culture at th…e turn of the century. In this absorbing book, John Neubauer examines the representation of adolescents in the literature, visual arts, psychology, and psychoanalytic theory of this period, and he considers the social institutions and youth movements that were formed to accommodate them. Neubauer argues that the depiction of adolescence in art and literature did not merely reflect its emergence as a middle-class phenomenon of industrial societies but helped to shape its social construction as well. Neubauer's discussion of adolescents in literature begins with the inner lives of some adolescent protagonists (Stephen Dedalus, Tonio Kroger and Young Torless) as told by adult narrators. His focus then becomes wider, moving to the adolescent as viewed by a peer-narrator, to the adolescent's cliques and gangs, and to the gardens, schools, and streets in which the narratives of adolescence are set. In the second half of the book he treats nonliterary subjects. Neubauer considers portrayals of adolescents by such artists as Munch, Kirchner, Heckel, Kokoschka, and Schiele. He discusses the narrative construction of Freud's case history of Dora and the problems of female adolescence in Horney's Adolescent Diaries, as well as questions of gender and homosexual identity in turn-of-the-century psychological theories of adolescence. The final chapters consider adolescence in school, church, the German Wandervogel, and the Boy Scouts, focusing on the literary and rhetorical means involved in institutionalizing adolescence.

Michel Foucault was both a historian and a maker of culture. Not unlike Nietz- sche, his adopted predecessor, Foucault has been severely scrutinized by scholars of the disciplines in which he worked, yet the real significance of his personality and work lie beyond disciplinary boundaries and even beyond the issue whether in specific instances he was right or wrong. Like Nietzsche, he will probably remembered most vividly as a great gadfly that questioned central assumptions in Western culture. Does this make Foucault a proper object of study in Arcadia, a journal devo- ted to comparative literature? Not, to be sure, if we restrict comparative litera- ture to the comparison of literary texts only. By presenting this volume, we should like to argue, however, for a broader, more liberal notion of comparative literature, one which allows for the comparison of literary texts with other cultural discourses and studies their interaction within their cultural and historical milieu. Such linkages are not unproblematic, and we are well aware that many literary scholars, even those who are sympathetic to a cultural study of literature, are worried that studies of this kind may jeopardize the specificity of literature and literary scholarship. It may be worth remembering, however, that the debate between intrinsic and extrinsic approaches to literature have a long history, and that some of the older and internationally most highly respected literary journals (for instance the Deutsche Vierteljahrsschrift für Literaturwissenschaft und Geistes- geschichte, to stay within the German sphere) are premised on broad, cultural approaches to literature [.].
