In den WarenkorbFirst Edition. [Children's fantasy trilogy] FIRST EDITIONS. Three volumes, complete. Octavos (21 x 14 x 11cm), Each with illustrations by Millar including a tissue-guarded colour frontispiece to 'Phoenix'. Publisher's red or blue cloth pictorially stamped in gilt, top edges gilt. Some mild toning and spotting, free endpaper of each book neatly replaced using similar paper, covers lightly worn, spine sunned to first title, child's charming ownership to third title. Overall an attractive, presentable set, seldom encountered. Originally published in the Strand as 'The Psammead,' this is Nesbit's beloved tale about the misadventures of five young protagonists and It, an ancient wish-granting sand fairy, and their subsequent encounter with a phoenix, a magic carpet, and a magical Egyptian amulet. Several elements in these tales were borrowed by C. S. Lewis for his Narnia series, and Tolkien's Roverandom paid homage, featuring a wizard named Psamathos Psamathide, described as a 'Psamathist', from an order of 'Psammeads'. Rare as a complete set (no others listed at time of writing).
