The proofs are on one side each of five strips (each approximately 60 x 15.5 cm) of discoloured high-acidity paper. They are in good condition, with a little light creasing, and slight chipping at head of first strip (not affecting text). They are headed 'GALLEY ONE [TWO, THREE, FOUR, EIGHT]'. Text clear and entire. The article reads continuously, with no hiatus between Galleys Four and Eight. Some simple errors indicate that these are early proofs, i.e. 'burned with a difference incandescence' for '[.] different incandescence' and 'Fire filled the whole hearth-place, liking over the edges' for '[.] licking over the edges'. Nehls's Letter (4to, 1 p, 46 lines of text): Good, on lightly aged and creased paper. Describes the 'composite memoir' he has spent some years compiling. Asks if he can use Patmore's memoir in his work, and whether she has letters or photographs to lend him. Regarding his 'project' he writes: 'I'm proud of it, I am indeed. And I can say this without undue egoism, for I didn't write the books -- I only collected, arranged, and edited the contributions. I think it speaks well for Lawrence that almost everyone I have approached has been willing to help.' Accompanied by a release form (4to, 1 p), signed by Nehls and by Patmore (dated by her 22 June 1957). Cooper's Letter (12mo, 1 p, 22 lines of text): Good, on lightly aged and creased paper. The editor of the London Magazine, John Lehmann, is away, but there should be no problem with the republication of the article, 'as The London Magazine only takes first serial rights in its contributions, and after that the rights in them are the author's'.
