The cost of the transaction was $15,000,000, around $18 per square mile. Control of the entire area was taken over by the United States, including large areas of the country which was inhabited - and managed - by Native Americans, who had never themselves ceded the land. Following the Purchase, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned an expedition to explore the territory and report back in as much detail as possible. A primary aim was to find a new travel route across the country, ensuring an American presence in the area before other colonial powers took advantage of the area and tried to establish their own footholds. The Lewis and Clark Expedition - alternatively known as the Corps of Discovery Expedition - set out from Camp Dubois on the 14th May 1804, crossing the Continental Divide, eventually reaching St. Louis, Missouri, in 1806. They were famously assisted in interpretation and interactions with local tribes by Sacagawea, a Lemni Shoshone woman who accompanied the expedition.The Lewis and Clark Expedition introduced the United States government to various Native American tribes and how trade with them could be promoted, alongside advising on the viability of the path they followed. Various botanical and zoological specimens were returned to the East Coast, including corn, or maize, grown by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello. It took nearly 10 years for Lewis and Clark to publish their journals, first in Philadelphia in octavo format in 1814 as History of the Expedition under the Command of Captain Lewis and Clark, to the Sources of the Missouri, thence across the Rocky Mountains and down the River Colombia to the Pacific Ocean. Here we find the first British edition, including Neele's highly important folding map, showing the expedition route. …

First edition of Edward Daniel Clarke's magnum opus "Travels in Various Countries of Europe, Asia and Africa" the author's personal account of a fascinating journey throughout three continents. Following a tour of Scandinavia in 1799, Edward Daniel Clarke (1769-1822) travelled through Russia and the Crimea before proceeding to Constantinople, Rhodes, and afterwards Egypt and Palestine. Greece was the country next visited. While touring this country, Clarke, as a mineralogist and antiquary, collected marbles, coins and vases and purchased a large ancient statue at Eleusis. From Athens he proceeded by land to Constantinople, and after a short stay in that city directed his course homewards through Rumelia, Austria, Germany and France. Each of the six volumes is lavishly illustrated throughout with numerous in-text vignettes and woodcuts, as well as full-page copper plates (many folded), depicting views, monuments, natives in traditional costume, ceremonies and processions, antiquities, etc. Includes several folded maps and charts. All the 185 copper plates and 157 vignettes and cuts are accounted for. Plates engraved by Joseph Skelton, R. Pollard, Laetitia and Elizabeth Byrne, F. R. Hay, J. Fittler, and R. Cooper after illustrations by E. D. Clarke, Angelica Clarke, Guarenghi, Martin, Dreier, W. Havell, Camporesi, J. B. Lusieri, Morritt, W. Harraden, Grelot, Fauvel, G. Wilkins, Henry Wrighte, and Preaux. Most of the delightful vignettes were engraved by Elizabeth and Laetitia Byrne. The maps and plans were engraved by S. I. Neele, and H. Mutlow. Sporadic clear water-staining along edges of plates in second volume (Part 2, section 1). Map. Zustand: Very good minus. Bright hand colored map [16" x 19 1/2"]. From an atlas (presumably his Universal Atlas). Sheet 30. With a 6" closed tear with some tape remains. There are a couple of bites to the margins, which measures 1" by 1/2" Engraved by S. Neele. A colorful map of Ancient Greece produced by theologian Thomas Stackhouse (1677-1752).…

Map dimensions 63 x 87 cm, overall 64.5 x 88 cm. An attractive folding map of the county with original colour in block and outline. Scale: ½ inch to one mile. Dissected into 21 sections and mounted on linen, both folded end sections with marbled paper tabs, one side with a publisher's label, folds into original marbled paper slipcase with printed label to upper cover. Some wear to the case with the upper edge of one joint cracked, the map slightly browned overall, otherwise a very good copy. Essex was the second Ordnance Survey map to be published, preceded by Kent in 1801. This is the true first edition of their map of the county, the full four sheet version being published the following year. Rare, the only institutional copies found are in the British Library, Cambridge and Oxford. The only auction record is the Wardington copy, sold at Sotheby's in 2006.…
