Revenue à Coppet de son séjour allemand, elle mit de l'ordre dans les papiers de son père et composa une biographie «Du caractère de Mr. Necker et de sa vie privée», qui figure en première partie de notre ouvrage, datée du 25 octobre 1804. Suivent une nouvelle version, remaniée par Necker en 1803, de son fameux «Sur la législation et le commerce des grains» (1775), et une série de courtes pièces intitulées «Esquisse de pensées». Successeur malheureux du banquier genevois, le dispendieux Calonne, qui s'était permis de vives critiques à l'encontre de Necker, est à son tour attaqué dans cet ouvrage qui contient notamment: Examen du plan d'attaque de M. de Calonne / Discussion du Tableau comparatif de M. de Calonne / Rapprochement du Compte-rendu (de 1781) avec le dernier compte publié par le Gouvernement / Observations sur le Compte général des Finances / Sur l'état dans lequel j'ai laissé le Trésor royal à l'époque de ma retraite / Sur la somme des emprunts depuis 1776. Ce texte paru pour la première fois en 1781, reçut le nom de "Conte bleu", parce qu'il présentait sous un jour favorable les finances du royaume. Ambos textos provocaron una polémica pública, fundamentalmente en contra, en medio de la cual Necker acabó presentando la dimisión después de que el Rey rechazara que interveniese en los gastos militares y de que le paralizase el establecimiento de aquellas administraciones provinciales. El volumen que ofrecemos recoge, junto a estos dos textos de Necker, dos de los más virulentos que se publicaron contra sus posiciones: Les Comments y la Lettre du marquis de Caracciole à M. d?Alembert, Lettre que conocería numerosas versiones apócrifas posteriores. Publicadas como anónimas, parece que ambas se debieron a la mano del también fisiócrata Charles Alexandre de Calonne. Y, junto a estos cuatro primeros textos, el volumen contiene otros tres textos, también anónimos, en este caso defensores de la actuación de Necker: primero una apología crítica, como lo es la Lettre d?un ami; luego una elogiosa defensa de sus esfuerzos, las Observations modestes d?un citoyen; y, finalmente, una encendida crítica al rey por haber dejado solo a Necker cuando su obligación habría sido haberle apoyado: la Requête au roi.- // (1) Quizás el estudio más relevante sobre los esfuerzos de transparencia y racionalizazión de la gestión de la Hacienda sea el estudio, Arnaud Decroix: "Question fiscale et réforme financière en France (1749-1789).
