The National Security Archive combines a unique range of functions in one non-governmental, non-profit institution. The Archive is simultaneously a research institute on international affairs, a library and archive of declassified U.S. documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, a public interest law firm defending and expanding public access to government information through the FOIA, and an indexer and publisher of the documents in books, microfiche, an electronic formats. The Archive's budget comes from publication revenues and from private philanthropists such as the Carnegie Corporation, the John D., and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and the Ford Foundation. This research establishes a roadmap for future scholarship and "freezes" the documentary record with official requests for declassification before the normal governmental document destruction processes can diminish the historical record. The National Security Archive encourages all users of our facilities to become a Friend of the Archive and make a tax deductible contribution to help offset the costs of Operation. The National Security Archive is a 501(c)(3) non-governmental, non-profit research and archival institution located on the campus of the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1985 to check rising government secrecy, the National Security Archive is an investigative journalism center, open government advocate, international affairs research institute, and the largest repository of declassified U.S. documents outside the federal government. The National Security Archive has spurred the declassification of more than 10 million pages of government documents by being the leading non-profit user of the U.S. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), filing a total of more than 50,000 FOIA and declassification requests in its over 30 years of history. Its collection on The U.S. Intelligence Community 1947 -1989L The Making of U.S. Policy contains previously classified documentation from the National Security Council, the Central Intelligence Agency, Department of Defense, military services and other federal intelligence agencies. At this time, it published these documents on microfiche with a printed guide and index. This brochure discusses briefly Intelligence Origins and Operations, The U.S. Intelligence Community: Organizations, Operations and Management, 1947-1989 [the focus of the collection], Inner Workings of Secret Agencies, and Insight into U.S. Intelligence Activities.
