In den WarenkorbFirst Edition, contemporary half calf. Sm.8vo, c.pp128, binding worn but perfectly stout [marbled paper sides rubbed away leaving bare boards], text a little soiled, acceptable copy of a rare & fragile little book. Endpaper inscribed in unsophisticated hand: 'Given to Charles Cole by George Roach on his Going to Sea March 17th 1852'. Without half-title: with engraved frontispiece. Rare: only title by Robert Bloomfield's brother Nathaniel, who worked in London as a taylor. Small book [6.25 x 4ins] printed locally by Gedge in Bury St Edmunds 'at his own risque', no doubt in tiny numbers : a 2nd Edition was issued a mere 10 days later. With long discursive intro on the Bloomfield family by Capel Lofft, Robert Bloomfield'' principal patron. Nathaniel, a taylor, feared that 'although the Muse can visit a Shepherd's Boy [ie. Robert Bloomfield] there may be some employments which exclude her influence. That a Taylor should be a Poet might appear too startling an assertion'. But Capel Lofft 'prevailed, notwithstanding, that this word [a Taylor], whose anti-poetic influence is so dreaded, should be in the book'. Nathaniel Bloomfield's only publication. **** To confirm availability before ordering, please click the link Ask Bookseller A Question.
