About the Book :- The work which Pandit Natesa Sastri has been engaged in for so many years, and of which this volume is only one small exemplar, deserves every welcome and support, as much from his own countrymen as from foreign dwellers in the land. He is doing most excellent work in collecting, arranging and recording in concise and easily assimilable form some of the more noticeable tales, traditions, customs, beliefs, and ceremonies of the Hindus. And it is to be hoped that many others of his educated fellow countrymen will follow his good example. For there are mines of wealth to be exploited in this manner, and there is work for many scores of writers, compilers and translators. But now-a-days, at any rate, he who runs may read many excellent treatises both by natives of India and by Europeans on various aspects and characteristics of Hinduism and the Hindus; and for a general work-a-day knowledge of the Hindus there is no more useful, and at the same time more interesting, study than that of current beliefs and practices such as are described by the author. About the Author :- S. M. Natesa Sastri was a noted exponent of Harikatha. He came from Tiruvarur and lived during the second half of the 19th century and the first 20 years of the 20th century. His most popular works were his collections of Tamil folk tales. He published a four-volume collection of Tamil folk tales titled The Folklore of Southern India (1884-88). He believed that folklore was national literature, and that it was "the most trustworthy manifestation of people's real thoughts and characteristics." His collections were based on Tamil versions of the folk tales drawn from his own memory and translated to English, and addressed to non-Indian audiences.Henry Pottinger Stephens, also known as Henry Beauchamp was an English dramatist and journalist. After beginning his career writing for newspapers, Stephens began writing Victorian burlesques in the 1870s in collaboration with F. C. Burnand and the composer Edward Solomon. Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About the Book:-In offering these few Indian tales to the public, the author cannot refrain from adding a few words at the beginning to express to Pandit Natesa Sastri his gratitude for the great assistance he has given him in collecting them, assistance without which they would never have seen the light in the shape of a complete volume. When he began writing down these tales, his only means of collecting them was through his native servants, who used to get them from the old women in the bazaars; but the fables they brought him were as full of corruptions and foreign adaptations as the miscellaneous ingredients that find their way into a dish of their own curry and rice, and had it not been for Sastri's timely aid, his small work would have gone forth to the world laden with inaccuracies. The book's foreword addresses how she was fascinated that folklorists from across the world saw so many countries have the same stories told in new ways, and she especially liked how the tales of India involved magic, gods and other elements. Pa??it Natê?a Sástrî, a scholar of 18 languages and a former government worker in the Department of Art and Sculpture Archaeology, helped her gather the true and authentic stories for Tales of the Sun. The fantasy and allure of the stories the duo gathered is nothing compared to the life Kingscote was living in the pages of the British papers. About the Author:-Born in 1860, Georgiana Kingscote was the daughter of a MP, and married when she was 24. Quickly after the wedding, Georgiana went to India with her new husband, Howard Kingscote, and the two had three children in 1886, 1887, and 1888. Shortly after her youngest child was born, Kingscote had two books published: Tales of the Sun, and The English Baby in India and How to Rear It. Shortly before Tales of the Sun was published, Howard Kingscote had become a Colonel. The Kingscote family returned to England and lived in Dover. Georgiana's first novel, The Woman Who Wouldn't, was published to great reception and sold out quickly in 1895, but the real story was in the papers later. Upon her death in 1908, she had written 65 books.Pa??it Natê?a Sástrî, a scholar of 18 languages and a former government worker in the Department of Art and Sculpture Archeology, helped her gather the true and authentic stories for Tales of the Sun.
