The September 21 & 28, October 5, & 12, 1935 issues of the Saturday Evening Post containing parts 1 through 4 of 5 of O Careless Love by Rex Stout, one of his last attempts at mainstream fiction. The first publication of this work preceding book publication, and arguably it's true first edition. Additional fiction includes part 5, 6 & 7 of 7 of Furious Young Man, a novel by I A R Wylie (9/21 & 28, & 10/5), Mr Gallup Gets Command, a short story by Norman Reilly Raine, Take a Witness, a short story by Arthur Train (9/28), The Curfew Tolls, a short story by Stephen Vincent Benet (10/5), & Christopher Columbus, a poem by Ogden Nash. The 10/5 issue includes an article about Louisiana's colorful & bombastic senator Huey P Long (Paradox in Pajamas by Herman B Deutsch). Cover art by Ellen B T Pyle (9/21 - Girls Sipping Sodas), J.C. Leyendecker (9/28 - She's My Girl!), Gordon Grant (10/5 - Model Ship), & Maurice Bower (10/12 - Quarterback Pass). The issues are in very good shape. The 9/21 issue has lLight wear to the edges with a soil streak along the spine of the front cover; the 9/28 issue is similar with some pen marks at the lower left of the front cover near the spine; foxing to the edges of the front cover of the 10/5 issue. The 10/12 issue is good only with the front cover separated from the bottom about 2/3 the way plus other chips and small closed tear, mostly along the spine. A very good set, & exceedingly unusual, with serial installments of an early Rex Stout novel. A large oversize lot that may require additional postage. Ellen B T Pyle, J.C. Precedes book publication. Additional fiction includes Little Feet, a poem by Ogden Nash (6/15), Bridewater's Half Dollar, a short story by Booth Tarkington (6/15), The Next Champion, an article on boxing by Jack Dempsey with Wesley Stout (6/29), and parts 4 & 6 of 6 of Dreamland, a novel by Clarence Budington Kelland. Cover art by Andrew Loomis (6/15 - Woman in Yellow) & Edgar Franklin Wittmack (6/29 - Bronco Buster on Butt). Condition issues include: 6/15 - light wear and soiling to the edges, a small chip out of the upper left of the front cover at the spine, a couple of pages with small closed tears to the fore edge, and some soil spots on others; 6/29 - light soiling to the front cover with some small chips to the fore edge, a small chip to the upper right of the front cover through page 4, and light edge wear to the rear cover. Overall a very good set with installments of an early Rex Stout/Nero Wolfe novel. A heavy, oversize set that may require additional postage.
