Edizione originale di questo saggio pubblicato anonimo ma attribuito da Benedetto Croce all'abate modenese Bartolomeo Nardini (in "Quaderni della Critica", 1948), testimone oculare dei fatti della Rivoluzione Partenopea del 1799. Peraltro "I Memoires diÂBartolomeo Nardini, scritti e pubblicati aÂParigiÂnel 1803, hanno una notevole risonanza e contribuiscono forse piu' di qualsiasi altro testo a diffondere e a radicare i pregiudizi piu'Ânegativi sugli abitanti delle Calabrie. 'LesÂhabitans de ces contrees', scrive Nardini per i suoi lettori francesi, 'sont extrement barbares, feroces et vindicatifs.ÂFuyant la societe' , ils aiment a vivre dans les campagnes , semblables aux sauvages , ils poursuivent leurs enemis jusqu'a' la destruction totale de sa famille, commencant par massacrer les enfans la mamelle."
