As such, its function can be influenced by minor derangements of either the internal homeostasis or the external environment. In virtually all neurodegenerative conditions, the various pathogenic processes selectively affect certain groups of neurons, leaving others intact. The reasons for such selectivity are unknown, and theories proposed to explain them mostly rest on speculative ground.
