Ya en Madrid ella traza la tragedia de amantes condenados por circunstancias políticas y expectativas sentimentales anticuadas a causa de demandas sociales nuevas. De acuerdo con su perspectiva femenina, la novela presenta un plan y personajes originales, cuyas voces ponen en tela de juicio las fórmulas románticas y realistas que hemos pensado caracterizan la novelística del siglo XIX. La temática transatlántica del libro demuestra la continuación de lazos culturales y contactos económicos en el antiguo imperio; y así cuestiona los nacionalismos que tradicionalmente se piensa que definen la literatura decimonónica. páginas/pasges.
