Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Illustrated by (dj) Nat Falk (illustrator). First Edition. (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a well-made "Colorcopy" reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing, and see Notes for further explanation) [ex-lending library book with minimal markings (a simple rubber-stamped name (City of Paris Circulating Library) on both pastedowns and endpapers, over-stamped with "Withdrawn from Library"), moderate shelfwear, small dampstain at lower right of text block affecting several dozen pages, vintage bookseller's label (State Book Shop, San Jose) on rear pastedown Rare mystery novel co-authored by renowned folklorist Randolph, his third (and I believe last) foray into fiction, following a juvenile story and one previous novel ("Hedwig"). The Ozarks were his special beat as a folklorist, and the subject of most of his other (non-fiction) books, so it's no surprise that this one employs "an eerie setting amid the gloomy Ozark hills." The mystery begins with the murder of a traveling evangelist, who is killed with a silver bullet, which as "everyone in the Ozarks knows, is employed only to kill witches." The narrator of the story is a female reporter for a small-town newspaper -- a fact probably not unrelated to the background of co-author "Nancy Clemens," who the jacket blurb informs us is "the pseudonym of a well known Missour newpaper woman who is a feature writer for the Kansas City Star and the author of several juveniles." NOTE again that this book bears a "Colorcopy" reproduction of the original dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing. (A "Colorcopy" jacket, as distinct from a facsimile jacket, is a color print of a raw (unrestored) scan of an original jacket, which displays whatever flaws or blemishes were present on the original, although in this particular case those imperfections were minor.).
