Paperback. Zustand: Fair. These stories collected by Bey Naki Tezel, under the aegis of the Turkish Folklore Society, were recorded verbatim from several aged people living in or near Istanbul. They are the tales told in the market-place, homely and vigorous, the creations of a poor and childlike people; tales for the most part of a world of rustic simplicity, for city scenes are few. The cunning fox, the headstrong hare, the faithful horse, the wise lion are here as well as the enchanted forest, the headsman, the man-eating giant and the witch; and to the collection have been added a number of beautiful illustrations by Olga Lehmann.
