Sociology and Sociologists in India: Perspectives from the North-West is an attempt to make a descriptive inquiry along with a critical analysis of the origin, development and the current state of sociology as a discipline in North-West India. Generally, like other social sciences, sociological studies at national and international levels are taken into cognizance and studies of regional sociologists are ignored which are equally important for the construction of concepts, theories and methods. India, as a society comprises various geographical and cultural zones which need exposition through regions so that richness of diverse sociological thought could be derived. It will also provide 'critical life' to sociology as an interdisciplinary discipline. With this frame of idea the present book is an attempt to examine the ideas of those sociologists who belong to North-West region of India, particularly Chandigarh (UT), Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Food Studies has emerged as an important interdisciplinary field of enquiry. It is not just only about the study of food per se. Food Studies deals with more than the mere production, consumption, and aesthetic appreciation of food. It looks at the relationship between food and people from the variety of… perspectives; be it sociology, cultural studies, economics, health, social policy, anthropology, history, art, science, management or technology. Sociology of Food is a comprehensive volume on food and its changing dimensions. Besides offering readings of some established models of change in food patterns from food in transition to dietary change, the book adds its share of interesting empirical studies based on fieldwork and devoted to processes of change. Chapters in this volume reflect on the anthropological, sociological and historical approach to food studies. It provides an excellent platform for the complex factors that shape people's food habits. The wide range of issues covered in the volume includes: varieties of agricultural production, aspects of food safety and security, the role of household structures and issues of gender in dietary transformations and patterns of food consumption. The book brings a sociological lens to emerging issues in relation to food and eating. Focussing on key texts and studies, the book will help students identify major concerns and themes for further study in this niche area of sociological enquiry.

Gender inequality: perceptive threat to health. 3. Gender analysis and population issues. 4. Understanding women's health and rights issues: a study. 5. Women and healt…h issues under law. 6. Medical encounters: the experience of illness and treatment. 10. Women and mental health: disposition, Narratives and treatment. 11. Women's perception of Yoga, health and lesiure. Index. In India, the relationship between gender and health is complex. The gender inequality that is entrenched in India's social structure and manifested through patriarchal system has put women in an unequal position in terms of health indicators. This has deep implications for the health and development of children. Gender and Health contains a collection of articles that critically reflect upon the current status of gender inequalities in health, and it develops an agenda for future research. The book examines, within the broader context of women's health, issues pertaining to their rights, medical encounters, and the different laws created to meet their health needs, specifically reproductive and mental health needs. The way forward is to mainstream gender equality concerns in the formulation of health policy and practice. The book's focus is to present a combination of theoretic frameworks and empirical realities on India's gender and health debate.

With its unique political culture, especially that which prevailed in post-independence era, paving the way for a type of democracy that vastly differs from those propounded by Western theorists and practiced in other Western countries. How democracy works for India is ample proof that it is indeed difficult to compare or match it with canonical cases forwarded by Western thinkers as proof or examples of democracy. It is important to emphasize here what is unique to Indian democracy a democracy with multiple layers of nationality constituting both a pan-Indian nationalism and assertive regional nationalism within the same citizenry. The present volume on Diversity, Democracy and Development aims to highlight such salient features of Indian democracy. The volume contains contributions from renowned scholars of India and the West and will be useful for both students and teachers and scholars of sociology, political science and history. It is a compilation of articles on contemporary issues broadly related to different countries, including those of Asia, Europe and South America. Thus, the present volume will indeed serve as a valuable source of knowledge for aspiring scholars who would like to gain both a historical perspective about the origin and evolution of democracy in Asia and Europe and the current geopolitics, especially with nation-state boundaries becoming more fluid in this age of Internet-driven instant communication technology and social networking.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. In the globalisation process cultures are influenced by one another and become more alike through trade, immigration, and exchange of information and ideas. However, in recent times the degree and intensity of the connections among different cultures and different world regions have accelera…ted dramatically owing to advances in science and technology. Globalisation has truly become an agent of social change. Post industrial revolution, the new world of entertainment and leisure activities have become an important subject of research in sociology. This festschrift, in honour of Dr. Ishwar P. Modi, an eminent sociologist and the past President of the Indian Sociological Society, brings together articles on various aspects of leisure in different societies. Both Indian and foreign scholars have contributed papers to this volume which would impress its readers with the richness of data on leisure and a variety of novel approaches to its study in cross-cultural contexts. Three ideas, however, are prominently noticeable in this book. First, the distinction of work and leisure is of Western origin. Its intellectual imposition to understand non-Western systems is fraught with risk, as concepts of work and leisure vary from one situation to another. Second, since great variation exists with respect to the activities of leisure, it is important that they should be documented as thickly as possible. And finally, globalization has contributed a great deal in deepening the distinction between work and leisure , and defining the contours of leisurous activities. Providing a number of empirical and historical studies of leisure from different cultures, this volume will be of immense value to the students of social sciences and humanities. (jacket).

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Contents: 1. The Foundations of Sociology. 2. Basic Concepts in Sociology. 3. Social Inequality. 4. Social Institutions. 5. Social Change. 6. Perspectives on Indian Society. 7. Social Research. What can be gained from introductory sociology? How much an individual student derives from an int…roductory sociology course depends, of course, upon his curiosity, alertness, and effort. There is, however, much to be gained. The storehouse of sociological knowledge which the scientific approach has produced, and to which additions are being made more rapidly than ever, will be found to contain information as well as understandings which are new to the students. Even material which at first looks like old stuff will, when really grasped, be seen in a new light. The result will be a new point of view, a new orientation, and a more reliable understanding of the social environment in which the student lives. Keeping in view the context, the book is divided into following seven sections: The Foundations of Sociology Basic Concepts in Sociology Social Inequality Social Institutions Social Change Perspectives on Indian Society Social Research This systematic introductory sociology textbook will be useful for students of sociology at all levels, from school to college and university. The book will be extremely useful for the students of professional education who are reading sociology in various courses of law, medicine, nursing, engineering, architecture, journalism, management, education, social work, religion, vocational rehabilitation and others. India is passing through a period where the forces of unification and segregation are acting strongly on the systems of living and thinking of all communities. On one hand, India is becoming more and more unified, on the other, the ethno-political movements are gaining strength across states. It was thought in the past that with the coming of modernization and technological development, primordial ties will occupy a back seat, and a kind of individualism, akin to its western counterpart, will emerge, where the individual will be known in terms of his or her qualifications, or achieved status, rather than the community to which he or she belongs by the fact of birth. It has been noted time and again that the traditional institutions have been able to adapt to the kind of changes brought about by the process of globalization, with the result that caste, kinship, religion, sect, creed and linguistic and regional ties continue to flo.
