This book is about an amazing ecological phenomenon known as bamboo flowering. The hill state of Mizoram (India) is covered by a thick growth of two particular species of bamboo which flower and fruit approximately every fifty and thirty years. The bamboo fruits which are a delicacy for the wild rats induce excessive breeding in them. Once these millions of hungry rats finish eating the fruits they invade human habitat and devour their harvest causing extreme food scarcity leading to famine. In the recorded history of Mizo hills this calamity is known to have occurred in 1737 1767 1827 1861 1881 1911 1931 1959 1977 and the predicted famine of 2007 is already ravaging the hills. Earlier the British used this calamity to subdue the valiant Mizos Christian Missionaries to engage in the politics of humanitarianism and the Mizos themselves to whip up nationalist sentiments. The 1959 famine is particularly remembered as it sparked off the 20 year long insurgency in Mizoram. The post colonial government both at the state and centre are currently engaged in an interesting competition of philanthropy to mitigate the current famine. The region is a Gateway for the migratory waves from South-East and East Asia, and is inhabited by a number of tribal communities, some relatively advanced while others proto-historic. The years under the British caused upheaval in their socio-cultural life. They experienced momentous changes in every aspect of their lives, from food to faith, dress to discourses, but the 'abrupt' withdrawal of the British com­pelled these 'apolitical' people to be drawn into a bourgeois political system. Neither sure of their true identity, nor the nation state they would like to belong to, confused by the prevalent nationalist discourses and frightened by the prospect of being submerged by a numerical majority, they faced a massive existential crisis. Devastated by the successive partitions of India with Pakistan and Burma, and alienated by the post-colonial Indian State's military measures as well as developmental neglect, coupled with racist 'othering' by the mainstream people, the region resembled more a trouble torn post-colonial African country rather than a part of India. The present study is about this crisis and how such a crisis led these communities to organize and equip themselves, debate and decide their future course of action and confront the colonial and post-colonial Indian States through a nationalist discourse and the process through which this confrontation led to the growth of secessionism and insurgency. This book details the entire process from the pre-British period to date, during which the movement itself underwent several crises and metamorphoses and, as a result, some struggles crumbled while others still carry on the revolt. Although a number of journalistic works are available on the subject, this is the first serious academic work written by a professional historian.…

Late Professor Amalendu Guha belonged to that first generation of historians in post-independent India who not just gave Indian history an identity but were also responsible for its decolonization, modernization and internationalization. When most historians were writing macro history, Professor Guha concentrated on regional history and brought into focus a region of India about which very little was then known-north-east India. Besides being an eminent scholar, he was a firstrate poet in Assamese, a fearless political activist, as well as a political theorist. He passed away in May 2015. In this commemoration volume to Professor Guha, eminent historians of India, his contemporaries, and a host of younger scholars who have grown up following his scholarship gather to offer a scholarly tribute to him through their own research which discuss, debate, discover and controvert a wide array of themes of Indian history.
