The work is the first systematic guide to children's health, including nutrition, supporting breast feeding, inoculation against small pox, treatment for fevers, jaundice, lactation, suffocation, constipation, epilepsy, vomiting, the care of eyes, teeth, etc. Opium, a narcotic, is discussed, "dangerous to infants." This issue was printed thirteen years after the first. "Sir Frederick Still considered this work 'the most progressive which had yet been written"; it gave an impetus to research which influenced the future course of paediatrics. Rosen was particularly interested in infant feeding." - Garrison and Morton. Rosen von Rosenstein (1706-1773), the famous Swedish physician, was a pupil of Boerhaave, taught anatomy and practical medicine at the University of Uppsala. The polyglot Jean-Baptiste Lefebvre De Villebrune (1732-1809), himself a physician, translated this edition and supplied a brief biography (pp. v-xii). He taught Hebrew at the College de France (1791-4). His interest in bibliography must be notes as he was librarian at the Bibliotheque de la Nation from 1794-5. See Still's History of Paediatrics, pp. 434,438: "In 1764 a very important work on the diseases of children and their treatment was published in Stockholm by a physician who had already become famous. He mentions artificial feeding by means of a little instrument or sucking-bottle. He was in advance of his day in advising that all food for children ought to be covered over, that no insect or any such thing can get at it. His description of scarlet fever is based on his own notes. How near Rosén came to the conception of bacterial infection is seen in his remarks on whooping-cough. The book is extremely rare. It was first published in serial form in the calendars of the Royal Academy, of which only one complete set is known. the present book-edition was thoroughly corrected and enlarged by the author. Waller 8216. "Underrättelse om barns sjukdomar", enligt Sten Lindroth "det mest inflytelserika arbete, som någonsin utgivits av en svensk läkare", publicerades först i form av små uppsatser i Vetenskapsakademiens almanackor 1753-71. Arbetet utkom första gången i bokform 1764. Lindroth skriver: "Utan att bjuda på några märkliga nyheter ägde Rosensteins pediatriska handbok i fullständighet och moget omdöme ingen motsvarighet, och den anammades snabbt som klassisk utomlands; före århundradets slut var den översatt till åtta främmande språk".
