Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - An outstanding Confederate cavalry unit during the American Civil War The Confederate cavalry unit that bore the name of the fearsome Indian tribe of the American south-west was, in fact, The 35th Virginia Cavalry Battalion, which was also known as White's Battalion or White's Rebels. It was raised by Elijah V. (Lige) White in Loudoun County, Virginia during the winter of 1861-62. The battalion-it was never large enough to be termed a regiment- was initially formed to operate as border guards along the Potomac River below Harpers Ferry, but was eventually mustered into the regular Southern states army, serving in the latter part of the war as part of the renowned Laurel Brigade. The Comanches also took part in partisan warfare throughout the war. The battalion was active during the Gettysburg Campaign,1863 particularly in the Battle of Brandy Station and it thereafter conducted a series of raids on Union-held railroads and defensive positions in Maryland and Pennsylvania. The battalion's battle history was an impressive one. These six companies-five from Virginia and one from Maryland-also fought during Jackson's Valley Campaign, The Waterford Fight, The Beefsteak Raid, The Battle of High Bridge and the Battle of Cedar Creek. An interesting extract from the history of the Laurel Brigade by McDonald accompanies the principal text. Includes photographs and illustrations not present in the original texts.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. The format is approximately 5.75 inches by 8.5 inches. [4], 499, [3] pages. Footnotes. Illustrations. Appendix. Cover has some wear and soiling. Publisher's bookplate inside front cover stating 249 of 1000. No dust jacket present. This history was written by the late Capt. William N. McDonald, who was ordnance officer of the Laurel Brigade. It was written at the request of General Thomas L. Rosser, its one time commander, who gave to the brigade the name :Laurel" and who by his courage,m dash, and skill, in great degree contributed to win the fame which mad it worthy to be known by that name. It was from the mss of letters received in response to his request that Captain McDonald chiefly gathered the material for this history. The Editor prepared the author's work for posthumous publication. The 7th Virginia Cavalry Regiment also known as Ashby's Cavalry was a Confederate cavalry regiment raised in the spring of 1861 by Colonel Angus William McDonald The regiment was composed primarily of men from the counties of the Shenandoah Valley as well as from the counties of Fauquier and Loudoun. Two companies contained men from the border counties of Maryland. The regiment was initially assigned to guarding the upper Potomac and was attached to the command of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson in the Valley. In the spring of 1862 the regiment took part in Jackson's Valley Campaign, where the exploits of the unit and its commander, Turner Ashby, became famous on both sides of the war. Near the conclusion of the campaign, Ashby was mortally wounded and Col. Richard Henry Dulany took command of the regiment, which had swelled to 29 companies. The regiment was reorganized at the end of the campaign, with the original 10 companies remaining and the excess 19 forming the 12th Regiment and 17th Battalion of Virginia Cavalry. Together with these two regiments, the 7th would become the nucleus of the famed Laurel Brigade. As part of the brigade, the 7th saw major action during the Gettysburg campaign in 1863 and was at the famed cavalry Battle of Brandy Station that same year. They took part in Jubal A. Early's ill-fated Valley Campaigns of 1864 and were at Appomattox Courthouse, though much of the unit escaped through federal lines and returned home to disband rather than taking parole with the rest of the Army of Northern Virginia. Reprint Edition. Limited Edition, Number 249 of 1000 [Originally published by Mrs. Kate S. McDonald in 1907]. …

THe results were so moving and impressive that Wolfe had 2,000 copies printed at his own expense, while all the profits from Doubleday's edition went directly to the men ; "We cannot state too emphatically that this books is presented not as a literary effort but as a series of social documents."--foreword ; "If a foreigner should ask me what Americans were like in 1946, I would hand him this book. Naturally it is not the whole story. It is only the story of a fairly small group of young men among those most hurt in body and mind by the accidents of war.
