A great collection of social and political satires by greatest satirist of 19th century Russia. Mikhail Evgrafovich Saltykov (pseud. N. Shchedrin, 1826-1889) was born into landed gentry, and worked as a civil servant while writing and editing for radical journals. Although he was exiled for seven years, he maintained an unflagging attack on Russia's social institutions, the new bourgeois capitalists, and the cowardice of the educated classes. He was an acknowledged master of the satirical sketch and published several collections of them in addition to Well-meaning discourses; he also published The History of a Town (1869-1870), The Golovyov Family (1879), and a Collection of Fables (1885).
