Mynde (illustrator). 1st ed. no front endpaper, t.p.+dedication+i-viii (Preface)+(vii, 'List of such Authors as I could procure and Account of who have treated of Physiognomy')+(i, errata+82+(4, Index)+(2, Index of lectures for 1744 and 1745)+ endpaper, 5 plates ex-pagination, 4 unfolding, 1 across an opening, these have 2 images per plate, mostly of female facial expressions; clean and unmarked bar very early small stamp to verso of plates:'The John Crerar Library', generally clean and unworn but end-paper and some plates have minor edge nicking/chipping of little consequence, front endpaper obviously missing. Protective grey card covers have been sensitively added and spine has handwritten author, title, date. No copies listed for sale on major websites when catalogued. An interesting and historically important work as virtually the only English language work of the topic between John Bulwer's mid-17th century titles and the first translations of Lavater. Parsons' interests are (as Charles Bell's would later be) primarily physiological or neurological, particularly in relation to emotional expression, rather than concerned with character reading. Two small ink lines in the top margin of the title page suggest it may have been cropped, but no other indication of this. The important John Crerar Library was founded in Chicago 1897, and is now run by the University of Chicago. How this item turned up in the U.K. is a mystery.
