8vo (130 x 180 mm). 59 ff. Ottoman Turkish manuscript on oriental polished paper. Black naskh script ruled in red with red additions; first two pages ruled in gilt and titled in gilt. 18th century leather-backed marbled wrappers. A complement to the important arithmetical work "Mecmua el-Kavaid", composed in the late 15th century by Atmacaoglu Muhyeddin Muhammed, which was a Turkish manual on the mathematics of accounting that did much to advance the transmission of Arab and Persian mathematics into Ottoman Turkish. - The present continuation expands on subjects that are omitted or not satisfactorily treated in Muhyeddin Muhammed's work. The author takes pains to explain complex mathematical problems in easily accessible language: at the beginning of his book, he presents an Arabic poem from the scholarly "Kitab Kafi", the fourth couplet of which contains an unsolved riddle, and undertakes to solve this riddle with the help of the science of arithmetic. The colophon states that the book was copied by Mustafa bin Isa el-Hallac on the 5th of Jumada al-Awwal 939 AH. It is possible that this scribe was also the author of the work. - Covers worn; aside from a few smudges, text is quite bright and clean. …

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. 4 pp., Contents, 308 pp., Arabic text within borders with printed notes in margins, occasional spotting, heaving foxing to first and last 2 leaves. The author's works intended as systematic handbooks for teaching in madrassas, have no claim to originality, but they were well-organized and had profited from the long scholarly tradition which had survived the Mongol invasion. Their popularity is evident from the great number of commentaries. Most have not yet been intensively studied; the best bibliographical surveys are those carried out by C. Brockelmann. Another works in the linguistic field written by the author was Al-Madkhal fi ?Ilm al-Ma'ani wa-al-Bayan wa-al-Bada'e and Al-Resala al-Waz?iya al-?Azodiya, a short treatise with numerous commentaries, on ?Ilm al-Waz?, the reflection about the relation between expression and meaning, especially with regard to technical terms. #35229.…
