It flared in shocking and dramatic fashion in Little Rock in 1957 and 1958; it smouldered in Virginia and reached a crescendo in Mississippi and Louisiana. Opposition to integration was bitter and bloody, but obedience to the law began to make headway. This is the story Mr. Muse, himself a former Virginia Senator, has to tell; a story of which The New York Times Book Review of May 31st 1964 said: "---this book is perhaps the most accurate, comprehensive fully documented work of its kind, undoubtedly one of lasting value. The impact of the decision, from the initial reaction of the Southern whites - surprisingly free of frank hostility - to the civil-rights revolution that developed near the end of the decade, is treated with precision and balance"'.
