The daily and seasonal cycle of day and night is the only reliable environmental cue that the bird can use to time its activities, and an appreciation of photoperiodism is fundamental to an understanding of how birds live. Virtually all metabolic processes exhibit endogenous circadian rhythms which are entrained by the 24-hour day-night cycle.
