Two third-person autograph letters to General Sir George Murray, concerning the Infante Don Sebastian. London: 14 and 27 January 1846. Two single sheets, each approximately 115 x 185 mm, written on one side in ink and addressed from 15 Princes Street, Cavendish Square. Old folds, toning and light handling marks; about Very Good. Two letters from the Neapolitan diplomat Prince Castelcicala to General Sir George Murray (1772-1846). In the first, Castelcicala tells Murray that he "will have much pleasure in sending to Naples the packet for His Royal Highness the Infante Don Sebastian." The second asks Murray to send the Prince another copy of "Lord Manners' late publication." Paolo Ruffo di Bagnara, Prince of Castelcicala, was the Neapolitan minister in London from 1840 to 1851. The Infante Don Sebastian Gabriel de Borbon y Braganza (1811-1875), a prince of Spain and Portugal who had fought for the Carlist cause during the First Carlist War, was living in Naples during this period. The recipient, General Sir George Murray, was a distinguished British soldier and politician who had served as Wellington's Quartermaster-General during the Peninsular War and subsequently as Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. Sir George Murray Humphry was a professor of physiology and anatomy at Cambridge, surgeon, gerontologist and medical writer. In 1836 he was apprenticed to John Green Crosse, surgeon to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. In 1839 he left Norwich and entered as a student at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London. He passed the first M.B. examination at the London University in 1840, obtaining the gold medal in anatomy and physiology; but did not present himself for the final examination. He was admitted a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England on 19 November 1841, and on 12 May 1842 he became a licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries. In the same year three of the surgeons at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, resigned their posts, and on 31 October 1842 Humfrey was placed third out of six candidates in a contested election for the vacant posts. This appointment made him the youngest hospital surgeon in England. He entered himself a fellow-commoner at Downing College, Cambridge in 1847, graduating M.B. in 1852 and M.D. in 1859. After the retirement of William Clark, professor of human and comparative anatomy, in 1866, Humphry was elected professor of human anatomy at the university. In 1869 he succeeded George Edward Paget, who was then elected president of the council, as the representative of the University of Cambridge on the General Medical Council. At the Royal College of Surgeons of England Humphry filled numerous offices. Elected a fellow on 26 August 1844, when he was still a year below the statutory age, he served as a member of the council from 1864 to 1884, was Arris and Gale lecturer on anatomy and physiology from 1871 to 1873, a member of the court of examiners from 1877 to 1887, and Hunterian orator in 1879. In 1887 he was the first president of the Anatomical Society of Great Britain and Ireland, and he served as president of the Pathological Society of London during the years 18913. 7pp., 4to. On three bifoliums and two single leaves of watermarked laid paper, all loose, with the bifoliums placed inside one another and the single leaves inserted after the title. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. Written out in black ink, with the titles in red ink, in an excellent uncial hand. The five translations are 'My Own, my Native Land' and 'The Family Dinner-Party', both by Bowra; 'This World is all a Fleeting Show' and 'This defileth a Man', both by Murray; and 'Whom the Gods love', by Byron. See his entry in the Oxford DNB, which states that he 'was after Wellington the most respected soldier of his time in Britain, whose opinion carried immense weight both at home and abroad and not only on military matters'. 2pp, 12mo. In fair condition, lightly aged, with slight creasing at head. Reads: 'Sir George Murray has to acknowledge the receipt of Mr. Wrights letter of the 4th. Instant, and in compliance with the request expressed in it, he encloses a Copy of his speech on the Catholic Relief Bill, as published in a reported form by the Proprietors of the Review of Parliament, and which he believes to be correct.' A supporter of Catholic emancipation, Murray was Colonial Secretary in Wellington's administration, and left office on its fall in November 1830. …
