The firm is 'sorry to hear' that she intends to 'take two volumes' over her book on Henry III, not considering that 'a biography of him could succeed in more than one complete volume. To take him to 1237 in the first volume would spoil the completeness of what we feel should be a one-volume biography.' He adds in manuscript: 'I hope we will not prove too unwieldy.'.

Publisher. Both letters one page, 4to, good condition. (1931) He asks if an American scholar whose stay in London and studies of Coleridge have been affected by illness can have a look at a relevant book belonging to Murrays, but in a Bumpus Exhibition. He thinks the Exhibition successful and adds in ms. "The Times gives us a nice notice today". (1932) He is congratulatory on the [Scott] Exhibition at Bumpus's, ading "What a lot of defunct papers there are!/ Hats off to your continuing & unflagging enterprise!" With: Autograph Letter, initialled "JGM" [John Grey Murray] to Wilson, discussing at length the book he is sending "J.W.II" (presumably Wilson's son)("written by a friend of mine", etc.). "This is the first book I have nursed through Albemarle St./ and I should be proud for it to find a place in J.W.II's doubtless already extensive Library." (A pencilled note indicates that Hampden Gordon's "Throught the Enchanted Wood" was the book in question.) Frank Mumby describes Wilson as "one of the outstanding booksellers of the day" (1956 ed., p.235). Three items,

See the entry on the Murray family in the Oxford DNB. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. Folded for postage, with short closed tears to the edges of central horizontal fold. Small biographical slip laid down at top left. Addressed to 'Dear Colonel Fellows' and signed 'John Murray junr.' Reads: 'Our binders have done the best they can with your Volumes, short of rebinding, but as you know patching up leather bindings in a really satisfactory way is not easy. / However, I hope that you will be satisfied with the volumes which I am sending on to you today.'.

India paper engraving (dimensions c. 22 x 16 cms) neatly laid down on piece of wove paper c. 29 x 22 cms. Very good, with the slightest spotting, and with minor creasing and staining to the extremities of the mount. A pensive Murray sits in an armchair, reading a manuscript.

12mo, 4 pp. 40 lines. Text clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'My dear Spencer'. He is sorry to have missed Childers: 'I came back early on Sat: morning fairly driven home by the weather.' Reports that 'Better reviews of the book are now appearing Athenaeum - evidently by Dilke: Tablet: Pall Mall &c.' Thinks 'Clarke will use his influence with the Times', the idea that 'King' has done so being 'entirely out of the question'. He does not 'suppose there is a word of truth in that paragraph in Modern Society', a paper about which he knows nothing: 'from its print & style it seems pretty low'. 'If such a statement had appeared in any reputable quarter, it might have been worth while writing to say that the Queen had given full permission - but I wd not condescend to correct "Modern Society".' The rest of the letter refers to a visit by 'Jack' (his son John Murray V) to 'Hugh' and 'Dorothy'.
