In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Latin edition, second issue, folio (394 x 242mm.), letterpress title in red and black, half-title, engraved dedication leaf to Dr Benjamin Fagel incorporating his coat of arms, additional engraved title with elaborate emblematic surround bound in as frontispiece, 2 engraved headpieces, second repeated once, by J. Baptiste [Adam] after Jan Goeree, woodcut initials and tailpiece, 245 highly attractive engraved plates of plants, all but one unsigned but some or all possibly by Joseph Mulder, 5 plates with binomial classifications added in pencil in an eighteenth-century hand. Full contemporary brown calf, with blind patterning, spine with raised bands in seven compartments, red morocco label to second compartment, speckled edges, minor worming at lower inner margin affecting approximately first quarter of textblock but away from plates and text which are unaffected, emblematic frontispiece very slightly shaved at outer margin without loss, later plates with slight browning and occasional marginal minor dampstaining. Munting's Phytographia Curiosa is the most extraordinary botanical work of the pre-Linnean period, with "illustrations that are remarkable for their elegance and originality" (Oak Spring Flora). The plates often feature, architecture, landscapes, urns - with titles on flowing scrolls. This is the second issue of the Latin edition of the author's Naauwkeurige beschryving der aardgewassen (1696) based, in part, on his Waare Oeffning der Planten (1672). Abraham Munting "was an eminent professor of botany and chemistry at the University of Groningen.[he also] founded one of the most extensive botanical gardens of the period, known as the 'Paradise of Groningen', which he directed from 1658 up until his death in 1683. Munting wrote a number of works on medical-botanical topics, but [the present work].enjoyed particular success, at least in part due to the novelty of the plates, which, in a radical departure from.the traditional florilegium, presented its plant species against charming landscape backgrounds. The illustrations are remarkable for their elegance and originality." (Oak Spring Flora, p. 174). Ownership signature William Beeston M.D. (1672-1732), physician, botanist, and founder of the Ipswich Garden: armorial bookplate of Doctor Coyte - Beeston's great-nephew Dr William Beeston Coyte (1740-1810), member of the Linnaean Society, and author of Hortus Botanicus Gippovicensis (1796), an annotated catalogue of his great-uncle's botanic garden. Handsome sound clean copy, very good indeed (see full description).

This is perhaps the most handsome and influential botanical of its day, with its near-dreamlike depiction of plants suspended above cityscapes and other backgrounds. Munting (1626-1683), was a Dutch botanist and botanical artist, the son of Henricus Munting (1583-1658). He studied under his father and at the universities of Franeker, Utrecht and Leiden, also spending two years in France where he obtained an M.D. degree in Angers. Returning to Groningen in 1651, he joined the staff at the Rijkshogeschool Groningen, which eventually became the University of Groningen. Here he taught for 24 years as professor of botany and chemistry. On his father's death he assumed management of the Hortus Botanicus Groninganus, from 1658 to 1683. His botanist friends sent him seeds from the Dutch East- and West Indies, Africa and the Americas. His daughter, Hester, died after eating Deadly Nightshade from the Garden. Munting subsequently developed a particular interest in the medicinal uses of plants. The present work, Munting's best known, was first published in Dutch as Naauwkeurige Beschryving Der Aardgewassen (1696). Illustrated were trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses of temperate zones, with some tropical and subtropical plants that had been introduced to the Netherlands. Nissen BBI 1429; Hunt 404.

In den WarenkorbRare first edition of a scholarly work on British herbs, including those used to prevent or treat scurvy, along with a treatise on various species of the American aloë. Although the Aloidarium title-page is dated 1680, Sweerts must have planned from the beginning to include it in the more extensive Herba and completed it after most of the Herba was finished, since its imprint gives nothing but the year and the index to both works begins on the verso of the last page of text in the Aloidarium. Abraham Munting (1626-1683), was born in Groningen, in the northeastern part of the Netherlands. He was a physician, and an internationally renowned botanist, an academic professor and director of the Hortus Botanicus at Groningen. The work is beautifully illustrated with flowering plants, sometimes in pots. Also interesting as a botanical Americanum.Foot margin of frontispiece repaired minor water stains, plates slightly browned, but still in good condition.l Bibl. Med.
