"The Way of the Woodcut" is the third in a series of… keepsakes published by the Pratt Adlib Press under the driection of Fritz Eichenberg, Chairman of the Department of Graphic Arts and Illustration, The Art School, Pratt Institute. The book was designed and the type set by Lgal Roodenko and printed by James Lanier at the Press of Lgal Roodenko. The woodcuts, made as a special contribution to this edition by Shiko Munakata, were printed from the original blocks, in an edition of fifteen hundred copies. Three hundred copies, wherein the blocks are printed on Japanese Okawara paper, are reserved for friends of the Pratt Graphics Workshop. Overall good condition, mild toning on the cover. Japanese artist Shiko Munakata's striking monograph filled with woodcuts of scenes of colorful, abstracted nature, depictions of robed monks and floating nudes that allude to Kami, or divine Shinto spirits. Munakata was awarded the Grand Prix at the Venice Biennale in 1956 and the 1970 Order of Culture, Japan's highest honor in the arts.

Munakata hat vieles von der Tradition des buddhistischen Holzschnittes übernommen und in seinen Werken blüht der alte Holzschnitt Japans wieder auf. Das Werk zeigt eine höfische Gesellschaft, mit Hunden und Pferden auf der Jagd zwischen Blumen.
