In den Warenkorbpaperback. Zustand: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

In den WarenkorbFirst Japanese edition, released during a period of rampant anti-foreign sentiment that would eventually result in the fall of the shogunate. Milner's history from Julius Caesar through to the reign of Queen Victoria was translated by the Protestant missionary William Muirhead of the London Missionary Society while he was based in Shanghai. After Muirhead published his Chinese translation in 1856, permission to print the volumes in Japan was sought by the physician assigned to the Choshu domain, Aoki Shusuke (1803-1864). The project was later taken up by the samurai and official Shishido Tamaki (1829-1901). In the 1860s Choshu, along with Satsuma, were at the heart of political tensions. Attacks on foreigners were rife following the forced opening of Japanese trading ports, and the lords of Choshu domain were particularly forceful in implementing Emperor Komei's 1863 order to "expel the barbarians". Printing a work like Eikoku-shi, one of the first comprehensive histories of Britain to be released in Japan, can be viewed as an early effort to understand the foreign threat. There are two known variants of this work, with the volumes either bound in eight or in five. The variant bound in eight, as in this copy, has a red publisher's stamp on the second page of Volume 1. There is at least one copy known with an additional 14-page introduction, but no precedence has been established. The two maps translated by Muirhead are of the Norman Conquest (p. 133 in Milner) and of the route Henry V took in his invasion of France (p. 315 in Milner). 8 vols, large octavo. With 2 woodblock maps at rear of vol. 8, publisher's red stamp on f. 1v as usual; text in Chinese with Japanese reading marks. Original yellow patterned wrappers, renewed white thread fukuro-toji binding, spine ends capped in patterned cloth, original printed title labels. Housed in modern blue cloth folding case. Library shelf label, bookseller's paper label, and red ownership stamp of the Tokyo University professor Kaigo Tokiomi (d.1987) in each vol., manuscript volume numbers on 2 title labels and 2 front wrappers. Overall a little soiled and abraded, front wrapper of vol. 1 browned, 2 vols missing title labels, marginal worming, just touching map, contents bright: a very good set.
