The present second edition incorporates editorial verification and commentary by Muhammad Bahjat al-Athari, a noted Iraqi historian and bibliographer, and includes an appended completion attributed to Sulayman ibn Suhayman, a Najdi scholar associated with polemical and historical writings on the Wahhabi movement. Early Arabic edition of these two intertwined classical sources on animals, both of which are the most comprehensive medieval Islamic works on zoology and natural history. Printed at al-Matba'a al-'Âmira al-Sharafiyya, Cairo, a private Arabic press active from at least the 1880s to the early 20th century (ca. between 1300-1327 AH / 1883-1909), known for Arabic classical literary, grammatical, and educational works. The first book by al-Damîrî, a prominent zoologist and natural historian in Mamluk-era Egypt, provides a comprehensive overview of the animal kingdom, focusing extensively on animals and their characteristics, drawing on both scientific sources and local knowledge. The book, which is one of the most comprehensive medieval Islamic works on animals, contains extensive citations from earlier Islamic scholars, including Ibn Mâsawayh, Ibn Sînâ, and others. Al-Damîrî also supplements these with his own observations and local reports. The second book in the margin and the second volume is "Ajâ'ib al-Makhlûqât", an important work of paradoxography and cosmography by Zakariya al-Qazwini, who was born in Qazwin in 1203 shortly before the Mongol invasion of the Khwarazmian Empire. It's "the most precious cosmography of the Islamic culture" (Brockelmann). The book was immensely popular and is preserved today in many copies. It was translated into his native Persian language and later also into Turkish. Consisting of two main parts, the book includes Qazwini's classification of the Islamic cosmography and zoology, which is accepted and used in Islamic literature and science. In his book, Qazwini described and systematized many terms known in Islamic mythology for the first time in her work, such as Ya'juj and Ma'juj [i.e., Gog and Magog], the Anqa or Simurgh [i.e., Phoenix], Homa, etc. After four introductory sections, Qazwini turns to the main subject. In the first treatise, he provides information on the ulviyyât (the celestial, or "above the moon" realm). This material is organized into thirteen sections (nazar) and covers the nature, forms, positions, and movements of the spheres; the seven planets (Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn); the fixed stars; the zodiac; the sphere of spheres (falakü'l-eflâk); the celestial beings (Azrâil, Mîkâil, Cebrâil, İsrâfil, as well as Münker and Nekir); and temporal concepts such as night, day, months (Arabic, Roman, and Persian), and seasons. The second treatise concerns the süfliyyât (sub-lunar, or "below the moon" realm) and is similarly divided into sections and subsections. It deals with the four elements, the sphere of fire, the sphere of air (including clouds, rain, wind, thunder, lightning), and water-related wonders, as well as the terrestrial sphere and some of its chapters. Subsequent parts of the work cover seas, islands, wells, the composition of minerals, plants, trees, animals, humans, jinn, giants, birds, and reptiles. The concluding section discusses the wonders of seas and lands. The second treatise is considerably more extensive than the first. In preparing his work, Qazwini drew on approximately twenty sources, including al-Jahiz's Kitâb al-Hayawân, the Arabic translation of Aristotle's Historia Animalium (Kitâb al-Hayawân), and the works of Abû Hâmid al-Gharnâtî and Muhammad b. Mahmûd al-Tûsî, among others, particularly noted the titles he explicitly cites. As of March 2026, some earlier and later editions are located in OCLC; we couldn't trace any copies for this edition.

This extremely rare book was presented to the Abbasid Caliphate, the new Arab allies of the Turks and it was edited and published based on the original manuscript found by Ali Emiri for the first time from the Sahhaflar Çarsisi [i.e., The Antiquarian Booksellers' Bazaar of Istanbul], includes also a remarkable and first printed edition of the map produced for this book as folded, based on the original manuscript written in 11th century Baghdad. A multiple first: It's the first and the most compact dictionary of Turkish languages and dialects; it includes the oldest account of the places where Turkish/Turkic and Central Asian tribes and communities live, their beliefs and customs; the book has one of the earliest world maps of the Eastern world, particularly also showing China, Russia with Asian geography, and the oldest known map of Japan (Tekeli). The book is an invaluable source about the Central Asian communities of the period and "entries in Turkic, Karakhanid (Khakani), Uighur, Oghuz, etc. in Arabic script, definitions in Arabic." (OCLC). Dîwân Lugât al-Turk was intended for use by the Caliphs of Baghdad written in Arabic, which is Lingua Franca of the Middle East, who were controlled by the Seljuk Turks. It has a map that shows a vast geography including countries and regions from Japan to Egypt. This is the first known map of the areas inhabited by Turkic peoples. The compendium documented evidence of Turkic migration into and the expansion of the Turkic tribes and languages of Central Asia, Eastern Europe, and West Asia, mainly between the 6th and 11th centuries. The region of origin of the Turkic people is suggested to be somewhere in Siberia and Mongolia. By the 10th century, most of Central Asia was settled by Turkic tribes such as Tatar, Kipchaks, Turcoman, etc. The Seljuq dynasty settled in Anatolia starting in the 11th century, ultimately resulting in permanent Turkic settlement and presence there. Meanwhile, other Turkic tribes ultimately formed independent nations, such as Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, and others new enclaves within other nations, such as Chuvashs, Bashkorts, Tatars, the Crimean Tatars, the Uyghurs in China, and the Sakhas in Siberia. Dîwân Lugât al-Turk is written for precisely a common reason. It is the common accumulation and common treasure of the Turkish civilization; it intends to present a common language of culture and communication concerning the differentiations of accent and dialect that arise from distance over space (geography) and time. Likewise, Dîwân Lugât al-Turk opens the conception of Turkish into Arabic, in terms of its worldview, apprehension of life, and cultural riches; it furthermore opens Arabic, the language of education, science, philosophy, and literature, into Turkish. It does so through reproducing Turkish in Arabic; it, so to speak, attunes the two languages to one another via their mutual encounter [.] Nevertheless, Dîwân Lugât al-Turk is not a work that thoroughly reflects the Turkish of the pe.

A remarkably early manuscript of Muslim law, dated to the 13th century and copied just five years after the death of the author. Simply titled "Fatawa" (and also known as "Zawa'id Majmu'ah"), it was written by Muhammad ibn Mahmou…d al-Ustarushani (d. 1234 CE), a Hanafi jurist from the region of Ustrushana, in what is now Tajikistan. His work is listed in Kayr al-Din al-Zirikli's Biographical Dictionary, alongside a short biography of al-Ustarushani himself. - A book of fatawa is a collection of Islamic rulings or verdicts given by a qualified jurist on issues of Islamic law. Al-Ustarushani's 13th century "Fatawa" is brisk and professional: the author poses a legal issue or question, and then discusses and answers it by citing a ruling. The legal issues themselves are often complex, with no clear-cut legal precedent, often leaving al-Ustarushani to urge his reader that a jurist must study such a case personally, and issue a verdict based on the evidence at hand. - A fascinating glimpse into 13th century Muslim law, contemporary with its author. - Marginal dampstains, and some marginal commentary trimmed; quite well preserved. - GAL I, 380.

Al-Rumi (1364-1436), known under the name of Salah al-Din Musa Pasha, was one of the principal astronomers at the famous Samarkand observatory. The present treatise is dedicated to his ruler and patron Ulugh Beg (d. 1449 CE) and illustrated with numerous astronomical and mathematical diagrams. - Colophon signed by the scribe as Muhammad Al-Tan(?) Al-Azhari. One extra diagram has been inserted via an errata slip, and many others decorate the generous margins; a few take up nearly an entire page. They show astronomical phenomena such as lunar and solar eclipses, the orbit of Mercury (long a focus for astronomy, as it is both the fastest and the most elliptical of the inner planets), and the movement of the Sun. - Light wear, quite well preserved.
