In den WarenkorbLarge folding engr. map & 1 folding table. Orig. embossed purple cloth, spine uplettered in gilt; spine a little faded, otherwise a v.g. copy. Ottley 408. Mudge, 1790-1854, was a surveyor and army officer in the Royal Engineers who served for a time with Wellington in Portugal and Spain. Here he sets out the case for a national railway system, while considering some of the associated problems of construction costs and proper policing. The final four leaves comprises a list of all the proposed railways put before the House, a total of 101; 80 in England, seven in Scotland, and 14 in Ireland. These are also shown on the large engraved map. The author is at pains to point out that he is not a railway speculator or lawyer, but rather a disinterested party keen to suggest 'the best means for securing to the public all the advantages that may be derived from this newly adopted mode of conveyance'. Inscribed 'From the Author' on titlepage.
