Contains a section on Directions for carving which has 4 steel engraved plates of joints of meat, poultry and fish. From an era when more meat ws eaten and more was eaten of each animal, hence recipes include Pig's Feet and Ears Fried, Roast Suckling Pig, Cod's head and Shoulders, To Boil a Calf's Head etc. Small ex pencil writing otherwise clean interior with all pages tight in binding. Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Original brown leather boards, attached across spine with a piece of sturdy black material, affixed to boards with glue. 100 x 170 x 27mm. (lii) + 354pp. One plate (No. VII) missing, of the nine called for. Boards worn on edges, with surface rubbed all over; original spine missing; replacement spine now becoming detached (could be glued, but maybe a more satisfactory solution could be found); first 3 leaves completely detached (1st leaf is covered with old writing in ink, a previous-owner's notes - dated 1833; there are also similar notes on 2 leaves to rear; writing hard to decipher but possibly of interest); for some reason, the words "formed upon" have been covered by a slip of paper glued to title-page - or possibly the page was torn and later repaired by pasting on the slip; pages darkened on edges, with perhaps half showing some spotting/foxing within; otherwise reasonably clean with text everywhere legible; apart from problems mentioned, binding sound throughout. 16mo., with 16 engravings on 4 plates, and 20 engraved illustrations in the text, text lightly age-soiled throughout; newly bound in brown cloth to style, original cloth label lettered in gilt laid down, a very good, firm copy. From the 1820s until the sixty-sixth edition of 1842 the illustrations generally comprise a frontispiece (usually incorporating the title) and nine engraved plates illustrating cuts, carving and trussing. In the 'new' booksellers' edition of 1846 the frontispiece becomes a kitchen scene. This edition, produced in handy 'pocket' format, appears to be the first with the illustrations rearranged to show carving in the text, and the engravings of cuts and trussing presented in plate form, perhaps for greater clarity. A new and revised edition, being a very scarce edition published by Thomas Harman Keble.Maria Rundell (1745-1828) was an English writer. In 1805, she sent an unedited collection of recipes and household advice to John Murray, of whose family she was a friend. Her work was a huge success; around half a million copies were sold in Rundell's lifetime. The book was aimed at middle-class housewives. It offers advice on economical food preparation, medical remedies, and how to set up a home brewery, and includes a section for the sick and poor.Illustrated with a monochrome frontispiece.In the publisher's original blind stamped cloth.
