FOURTH EDITION inscribed 1846 (first published in 1837), small 4to, 135 x 105 mm, 5¼ x 4 inches, rebound in 1847, half dark red roan, marbled boards, gilt lettered and ruled spine, pages: xiv, 272, engraved frontispiece, extra engraved illustrated title page by John Gilbert (dated 1843) showing mother with book surrounded by 4 children, and 14 attractive engraved plates, many of young children. 97 sweet little prose pieces (not really stories) aimed at children as young as 3 years: The Play-house; Charley's Orange; Susan and her Cake; Charlotte's Magic Fish etc. Boards a little rubbed, head and tail of spine slightly worn, neat inscription on front pastedown and small name and date at top of printed title page, plates foxed in the margins. A good copy of an uncommon book for young children. The Dartons, page 479-80, No. H797(4); not in Osborne, Gumuchian or Oppenheimer. For a children's book can you imagine the hands and the families that this little book went through? Beautiful brown buckram cover on this hardback with faded gilt embossed image on front. Faded embossed design and gilt titling on spine. Hand colored lithographs inside. See photos. VERY RARE. Could not find another copy anywhere, so I'm guessing at this price. Might be priced too low for the scarcity. A true collectible. Will NOT go down in value as long as the ne owner keeps this intact. Signed and dated Christmas 1852 inside front page. BR (Box 164).
