In den WarenkorbZustand: Very good. 1880, London, John Murray, second edition, ppliv + 285 + 32 publisher's catalogue, black and white map frontispiece, brown decorated cloth, containing a substantial introduction by David Gill. David Gill, later Sir David, (1843-1914), astronomer, was the eldest son of David Gill (1789-1878), a watchmaker with a well-established business in Aberdeen. He was educated at Dollar Academy and at Marischal College, Aberdeen, where he was inspired by the lectures of James Clerk Maxwell. He was apprenticed as a watchmaker and became a competent maker of watches and scientific equipment. At the age of twenty he became interested in astronomy and having equipped himself with instruments, some made by himself, he came to the notice of astronomy professionals after taking some long-exposure astronomical photographs of the moon. In 1870 Gill married Isobel Sara (1849-1919). Two years later the opportunity came to devote his time exclusively to scientific pursuits when he undertook the management of a private observatory that Lord Lindsay was setting up on his country estate. After an expedition to the island of Mauritius to observe the transit of Venus in December 1874, Gill undertook a further expedition to the island of Ascension in order to measure the distance of Mars in 1877, using the same techniques as he had used on Mauritius. On this expedition he was accompanied by his wife, who published this interesting account of their experience (the first edition was published 1878). The expedition was a great success, the sun's distance being determined with much greater accuracy than previously. This work earned Gill the gold medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1882. He was later appointed Her Majesty's astronomer at the Cape of Good Hope, where he remained for 28 years; elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1883 and created KCB in 1900. The Royal Astronomical Society awarded him his second gold medal in 1908 and chose him as president for the period 1910-12.
