Some scuffing to crown and foot of spine and some speckles and rubbing to boards. Binding good and tight and complete. No date on the title page. Copyright page dated only 1874. 139 pages + 7 page sample of Duffey's other book, 'What Women should Know.' Pages slightly and evenly toned from age, but clean throughout. No stains or marks or tears. Text block tight and square. Duffey was a painter, a printer, and an advocate for women's rights and education. This volume is an argument for co-education, written in the form of a response to Edward H. Clarke's essays in which he posits that women's mental capacity is limited, and that their physical constitutions also limit their ability to learn. Duffey's rebuttals are forceful and long-overdue -- and it is remarkable that in 1874 these arguments needed to be made. This is the original, first edition, printing of this book, not a reprint.
