Leather-bound. Zustand: Very Good. Third Edition. Imperial Octavo (10 3/8 in. x 7 1/4 in.). Dark brown Halfbound Morocco over very scuffed and rubbed stone-marbled boards. Rubbing to extremities. Five raised bands (six compartments), with title lettered in gilt in second to the top, and elaborate circular design of an Irish Harp within a wreath, centered within floriated border, to EACH compartment, and the word "Illustrated" to very bottom of spine. 5 Engravings on steel by Maclise, and 53 Woodcuts by : Brooke, Cruikshank, Evans,Franklin, Gilbert, Harvey, McIan, MacManus, Maclise, Nicholl, Sargent, Timbrell,Townsend, Weigall, and West. Mild age-toning and only very occasional spotting or foxing, but none to obscure. Front board beginning to separate for four inches down from top, but holding firm. Top Edge Gilt. Stone marbled endpapers of light brown, beige, aquamarine, orange and yellow. Blue booksellers ticket to bottom of front pastedown ("E. Nettleton/Bookseller Stationer and Printer to Her Majesty. Plymouth"). Previous owner's inked inscription ("To Joan from Grandpa Salter, Christmas, 1937). Lovely frontis engraving of author Anna Maria Hall, holding a book entitled "A Book of Gems, 1830) in her hands. 380 pp. of text, followed by a 4-pp, section by MR. AND Mrs. S.C. Hall, entitled "Ireland, Its Scenery, Character, &c. &c.", concluded by a 30-pp. section of advertsements. Anna Maria Hall (1800 - 1881) was an Irish novelist who often published as "Mrs. S. C. Hall". She was born Anna Maria Fielding in Dublin, but left Ireland for England at the age of 15. Mrs Hall's first recorded contribution to literature is an Irish sketch called "Master Ben", which appeared in The Spirit and Manners of the Age, January 1829. Other tales followed. Eventually they were collected into a volume entitled Sketches of Irish Character, 1829, and henceforth she became an author by profession. Hall's sketches of her native land contain fine rural descriptions, and are animated by a healthy tone of moral feeling and a vein of delicate humour. Her books were never popular in Ireland, as she saw in each party much to praise and much to blame, so that she failed to please either the Orangemen or the Roman Catholics." Contains only one page of advertising, that being a two-color (black and orange) illustrated piece for Tangee cosmetics inside front cover. The eleven articles include: Why Shouldn't Women Run the World?, How to Lose a Man?, and Man's Magazine Man. The nine stories include: Men are the Darnedest, The Child Hater - There's Something Wrong When a Man's Childless, and Telephone Number, in which a housewife's calls to a gentleman are nearly discovered by her husband. Fantastic section of full-page black and white photos of women at work entitled "The Weaker Sex" includes women of Osaka's Toyo Textile factory training with rifles, Mrs. Ruth Yeamans - Idaho's only woman police judge, Welding instructor Mrs. Anne McEnally, Mlle. Nadia Boulanger - first woman Conductor in Royal Philharmonic history, diver Mrs. William Nichols of Philadelphia, Miss Bertha Sherfy - U.S. Treasury Department expert, Acme photographer Joy Lacks (in China with troops), seawoman Anna Tymanina - third officer of Soviet freighter 'Kalinin', and long-distance canoeist Marie Sarkipato. Many one and two-color cartoons. Clean, tight and unmarked with light wear. Black carrying string mounted in two holes punched by printer near top and bottom of fore-edge, per illustration of fancy lady on page one who proudly holds her copy by the string as if it was a purse.
