(recto title, verso printer's note), [v]-vi (Contents), [vii]-xii (Introduction), [13]-183 pp. A presentation copy, with "From the Author" in manuscript to front free endpaper and "E.A. Moorhead Widey Court 1827" to front pastedown. Boards worn and detached; spine worn with small portions of head and tail lacking. In very good condition internally. A scarce and valuable work. An English opera enthusiast and amateur composer, "Mount Edgcumbe recorded his experiences in Musical Reminiscences of an Old Amateur Chiefly Respecting the Italian Opera in England for Fifty Years, from 1773 to 1823 (London, 1824). Subsequent editions extended the period under discussion . Frequently his own eye-witness account, the Reminiscences are a valuable complement to contemporary British writings such as those of Charles Burney and William Parke . His vivid descriptions of the leading singers of the age, several of whom he knew personally, shed light on matters such as the allocation of roles . He blamed Rossini's works for undermining the golden age of opera, lamenting the popularity of pezzi concertati, the neglect of Metastasian conventions, and changes in vocal styles." Four pages, 8vo, vestiges of an album page on final page, text clear and complete. He is sending some MSS. to be bound up, giving detailed instructions. He reminds Andrews of previous work, and insists on secrecy. He asks him to post (and pay for) a "foreign letter", and asks "how the Opera succeeds & if the men singers are liked. In a postscript he asks for the third volume of "Johnson's Life" since he has nearly finished the second. A note in another hand identifies the writer as Richard Edgcumbe, Lord Mount Edgcumbe (1764-1839 (DNB) (BBTI has several candidates, probably duplicating eachother. Further clarification not possible.) WITH: Autograph Note, third person, one page, 8vo, spiked, Sir Billingham Jackson, Norton Conyers, 26 March 18[3?]7, to "Mr Andrews" asking him "not [underlined] to send another box of Books" since he is about to visit "Town" [London]. Another hand has added that Andrews was a Bond Street bookseller. BBTI lists none in Bond Street at this time, and "The Post Office London Directory" (1846) lists a "Mrs Eliza Andrews, bookseller & librarian, 167 New Bond st", not "Mr". A correspondent, Jon Crumiller, tells me that "Andrews John, Bookseller, Stationer, &c. 167, New Bond-str." is listed in the 1827 London Directory.…

Three letters signed "Mt: Edg:", two with address panels. A total of six pages. Mount Edgcumbe House is a Grade II listed stately home in Cornwall, originally constructed in the mid-16th century; its gardens and parkland are Grade I listed in the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England. The formal gardens were developed from 1750 to 1820. Highlights include Milton's Temple (c. 1755) an Ionian temple with a plaque bearing lines from Paradise Lost and an Orangery (c.1760). These three letters, written by the British peer, naval officer and politician George Edgcumbe to a Mr Birt presumably his steward relate to the management of his house and garden during his extended absence.
