Gilt vignette and gilt & blind border to both boards. Gilt decoration to board edges, blind tooled turn-ins. Marbled page edges and endpapers. Spine rubbed and lacking most of the gilt decoration. Light marking to boards. Good solid binding with no cracking to joints. Occasional patches of foxing to the text. A couple of ink spots to one page. Heavy foxing to some of the plates. Provenance: from the library of Williamstrip Park, Coln St. Aldwyns - seat of the Hicks Beach family. Inscribed to leading presentation page: 'Michael Hicks-Beach from H.J.C. Harper, March 23, 1850.' Henry John Chitty Harper served as chaplain of Eton College. In 1856 he became Bishop of Christchurch, New Zealand and eventually went on to become the second Primate of New Zealand. The book recipient was Sir Michael Hicks Beach, Bt., 1st Earl of St. Aldwyn and 9th Baronet of Beverston. He had a long political career, serving as a Conservative MP from 1864 until 1906, twice serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer, and briefly as Leader of the Opposition in 1886. An imperfect but still attractive volume, with interesting provenance. Overall condition is Very Good Minus. Size: 5.75 x 8.75 inches (14.5 x 22.5 cm). Hardback. Printed pages: Large 8vo. lxvi, 142.

Black ink gift inscription to first blank: 'William K.H.R. White | with the best wishes | of his sincere friend | Charles J. Cornish | on his leaving Eton | Midsummer 1847.' Heavy spotting to plates, blanks and facing leaves, otherwise crisp and clean. Spine toned, with some light rubbing and a couple of bumps. Very good. A decidedly deluxe edition of Gray's poetry, with about one third of the volume consisting of a Life of the poet. Likely bound to be used interchangeably as a gift or prize book.

A decidedly deluxe edition of Gray's poetry, with nearly half the volume consisting of additional material, including a Life of the poet, some literary criticism, and even a series of 'introductory stanzas' by the Reverend John Moultrie. Likely bound to be used interchangeably as a gift or prize book, it contains no evidence of a dedication or prize inscription.
