The work contains extensive technical and methodological information on chronometry and the use of chronometric instruments, followed by observations made during the Capricieuse's circumnavigation with detailed notes on the Pacific (Marquesas Islands, Tahiti), Cochinchina, the Sunda Islands, and the coasts of China and Korea. Bound with two other valuable essays resulting from scientific expeditions along the coast of South America, notably Brazil, with the object to map the region more precisely. The second work for example discusses the longitudes of principal points along the Brazilian coast which would be used for a new map of the coastal line of Brazil, among others Paranagua, Cabo Frio, Ilhéus, Camamu, Morro de São Paulo, Bahia, Fernando de Noronha and Céara. The thirty-two gun corvette La Capricieuse sailed underthe command of Gaston Rocquemaurel (1804-78), who already had a distinguished career in the navy and was second-in-command on Jules Dumont d'Urville's voyage to the Pacific on the Astrolabe, 1837-40. "Officially, it was a political mission to China, but Rocquemaurel also had some scientific assignments. He explored unknown parts of the Sea of Japan, reconnoitred the coasts of Indochina, and, by following Lapérouse?s route along the coasts of Korea and Kamchatka, he filled in some of the last uncharted areas on 18th-century maps" (Caffarel). Ernest Mouchez (1821-92) served as lieutenant on board and took responsibility for hydrographic and astronomical observations as they sailed along the coasts of Vietnam, Korea, China and Macao correcting many of the errors they found on the English maps they brought with them. He further elaborates on these observations in the accompanying pamphlet, which concerns the Brunner portable telescope which he used on board. An official account doesn't appear to have been published and so these are two of the few contemporary sources on the voyage. Mouchez also served on voyages to South America and the Indian Ocean, and later became the director of the Paris Observatory. Elle est ornée de 3 planches en héliogravure, dont u…ne dépliante, et de 4 photographies originales contrecollées sous serpentes légendées. Tandis que l'Observatoire de Meudon poursuivait, à la suite de Janssen, l'aventure de la photographie du soleil, Mouchez et les frères Henry entreprirent, à l'Observatoire de Paris, un état photographique du ciel. Le but était d'en dresser une carte ; pour cela, ils firent construire à grands frais un télescope équatorial photographique de 33 cm d'ouverture et de 3,43 m de distance focale. On peut le voir représenté ici sur la figure de la p. 29. La publication de cet ouvrage permit à l'équipe de l'Observatoire de présenter leur projet avec quelques illustrations dont certaines sont les premières représentations photographiques de certaines parties du ciel. Ernest Mouchez (1821-1892). - Officier de marine et astronome. Depuis sa sortie de l'École Navale en 1839 jusqu'en 1874, il passa sa vie dans des expéditions sur mer, et acquit la réputation d'un excellent officier de marine, d'un géographe distingué et d'un habile astronome. Dans les campagnes qu'il fit dans les mers de Chine, de l'Inde et de l'Océanie, dans la mer des Antilles, en Chine, dans l'Amérique du Sud, au Brésil, il leva un grand nombre de plans de fleuves et de baies, et détermina les longitudes et les latitudes des principales localités qu'il visitait. En 1875, le Bureau des Longitudes confia à Mouchez l'organisation et la direction de l'Observatoire astronomique de Montsouris. En 1878, Mouchez fut nommé contre-amiral et directeur de l'Observatoire de Paris.
