Glaciofluviatile fossiliferous boulders, known as Sternberger Gestein, occur in northern Germany in the area of Schwerin-Sternberg (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). Stratigraphically, they are equivalent to the sandy-silty, sublittoral S?lstorf Beds (Eochattian, Late Oligocene of the southeastern North Sea Basin). These boulders contain a diverse subtropical elasmobranch fauna of 24 shark and 10 batoid taxa, of which 21 and 3 could be identified at species level. Fossil remains include isolated oral teeth, caudal stings, thorns, gill rakers, and scales. The fauna is dominated by sharks living as recent taxa in the mesotrophic-littoral (Carcharias, Physogaleus, Carcharhinus, Squalus), the mesobenthic-littoral (four scyliorhinid taxa), the eurytrophic-littoral (Notorynchus, Galeocerdo) and microtrophic-littoral (Cetorhinus) realm. The genus Carcharias is represented by three taxa, one of which is new: Carcharias sternbergensis. As recent taxa epipelagic (Isurus, Alopias}and mesobathic (Hexanchus, Mitsukurina) sharks and the large predator Carcharocles angustidens are rarely recorded. More than 97% of the batoid teeth belong to the benthic genera Raja and Dasyatis and the aquilopelagic genus Myliobatis. The batoid genera Torpedo and Gymnura and the shark genera Hexanchus and Mitsukurina are recorded for the first time in the Chattian of the North Sea Basin. The new scyliorhinid genus Pachyscyllium is erected, including three species: P. albigensis sp. nov. (Rupelian, Mainz Basin), P. braaschi sp. nov. (Chattian, North Sea Basin), and P. venloensis (Weiler, 1943) (Hemmoorian, North Sea Basin). Elasmobranch faunas of the Doberg Formation (Eochattian and Neochattian) and Kassel Formation (Eochattian), both from the southern North Sea Basin, are similar to the Sternberg fauna. They are, however, less well-known because taxa with small teeth are rare due to lack of sampling finer residues. Isurolamna und Parotodus are presently known from the Doberg and Kassel Formation only. Die Molluskenfauna der sp?tmioz?nen Glimmertone von Gro? Pampau wird grundlegend bearbeitet, wobei reiches, in den letzten Dekaden von einer Vielzahl von Privatsammlern gesammeltes Material untersucht werden konnte. Die Bearbeitung ergab eine Gesamtfauna von 239 Arten bzw. Taxa (63 Bivalven, 7 Scaphopoden, 169 Gastropoden), von denen 64 nicht spezifisch n?her bestimmbar waren. Daneben werden im systematischen Kontext vier neue Taxa von anderen Lokalit?ten beschrieben. Definition und Leitarten der Regionalstufe des Langenfeldiums s. lat. werden diskutiert. Dies f?hrt zu einer Re-Aktivierung der von Hinsch (1987) besprochenen Gliederung des Langenfeldiums s. lat. in drei ?Unterstufen?, die von sp?teren Autoren (z. B. Spiegler & G?rs, 1996) wieder verworfen worden war. Anhand von charakteristischen Molluskenarten werden hier erneut die drei Stufen G?hlitzium (im Sinne der ?G?hlitz-Mecklenburger Stufe? von Staesche, 1930 anstelle des j?ngeren Begriffs Levensauium von Hinsch, 1987), L?neburgium und Langenfeldium s. str. verwendet. Taxonomie und Nomenklatur der Molluskenfauna werden kritisch revidiert, indem umf?ngliche Vergleiche mit ?hnlichen bzw. nahe verwandten Arten aus ?lteren oder j?ngeren Mioz?nstufen angestellt werden, die nicht selten phylogenetische Reihen bilden. Dies macht einige taxonomische und nomenklatorische ?nderungen und Neubeschreibungen notwendig, da sich die bisher konventionell verwendeten Bestimmungen h?ufig als nicht tragbar erweisen. Da zur Kl?rung weitere, sehr umfassende vergleichende Untersuchungen n?tig sind, k?nnen viele Resultate dieser Untersuchungen hier nur vorl?ufig und kurz diskutiert werden, da dies sonst den Rahmen der Bearbeitung einer Lokalfauna weit ?berschritten h?tte. Somit m?ssen manche Neubeschreibungen (auch anhand besseren Materials) weiteren Arbeiten vorbehalten bleiben. Auch bisher gebr?uchliche Gattungsnamen halten einer kritischen Neubetrachtung nicht stand und m?ssen ge?ndert werden: Statt Aquilofusus Kautsky, 1925 bzw. Scalaspira sensu Tembrock (1968) muss Pirgos Gregorio, 1885 verwendet werden, statt ?Sipho? bzw. Colus sensu auct. ist Eurydike Kautsky, 1925 zu benutzen, Euroscaphella Van Dingenen et al., 2014 ist ein j?ngeres Synonym von Pyrgomitra M?rch, 1869, die bisher zu Cyclocardia Conrad, 1867 gestellten Arten m?ssen unter Scalaricardita Sacco, 1899 gef?hrt werden, f?r zwei Artengruppen der Astartidae sind jeweils neue Gattungen n?tig. F?r die Gattung Pseudotoma Bellardi, 1875 und andere verwandte Gattungen werden auf der Basis der Argumente von Beu & Maxwell, 1990 die bisher mit den Borsoniidae synonymisierten Pseudotominae in den Rang einer eigenen Familie Pseudotomidae Bellardi, 1875 erhoben. Neotypen werden aufgestellt f?r Fusus gregarius Philippi in Volger, 1845, Fusus meyni Semper, 1861, Pleurotoma zimmermanni Philippi, 1847. Ein Lectotypus wird festgelegt f?r Fusus distinctus Beyrich, 1856. F?r Stenodrillia Korobkov, 1955 wird nach ICZN Art. 70.3.1 Pleurotoma allionii Seguenza, 1875 als Typusart fixiert. The Lower Mica Fine Sand (LMFS) Formation at Werder-Uesen, northwestern Lower Saxony, Germany, yields 40 shark and 12 batoid species, 13 of which are reported in open nomenclature. The recovered elasmobranch remains are mainly isolated teeth, and less commonly gill rakers, caudal spines, thorns, dermal denticles and vertebrae. The fauna is the richest thus far reported from shelf regions of the southern North Sea Basin and also one of the most diverse elasmobranch faunas collected from the Early and Middle Miocene of Europe. The sediments of the LMFS Formation sampled at Werder-Uesen represent the upper levels of the early Hemmoor regional stage (?Behrendorf substage?) which corresponds to the middle and late Burdigalian. The dinoflagellate cyst assemblage recovered at Werder-Uesen correlates with the Cousteaudinium aubryae Biozone of Dybkja er & Piasecki (2010) which has a late Burdigalian age. Most shark and ray genera of the Werder-Uesen fauna, e.g. Carcharias, Chaenogaleus, Carcharhinus, Galeocerdo, Hemipristis, Paragaleus, Rhizoprionodon, Sphyrna, Aetobatus, Dasyatis, Rhinobatos, Rhynchobatus, Rostroraja and Taeniura, are closely related with present-day neritic and benthic taxa dwelling in warm-temperate and subtropical shelf seas. In addition, a small but significant elasmobranch assemblage indicative of pelagic, oceanic habitats (9 species of Isurus, Alopias, Megachasma, Prionace, Megascyliorhinus, Plinthicus) is present, whereas taxa living in present-day deepwaters of the oceans and continental slopes (Hexanchus, Echinorhinus, Iago) are very rarely encountered. 25 shark and 8 batoid taxa of the Werder-Uesen fauna entered the Miocene North Sea Basin for the first time. The prominent increase in species richness, which is known also for other groups of vertebrates and invertebrates in the early Hemmoor regional stage, likely results from the middle to late Burdigalian warming that passed into the Mid-Miocene climate optimum. The common presence of some species of Isurus and Alopias in the LMFS Formation, compared with their uncommonness or absence in Aquitanian to early Burdigalian sediments of the same region, supports the hypothesis, that a permanent marine connection became established in middle Burdigalian times between the southern North Sea and the warm-temperate eastern Atlantic. Interregional comparison shows a marked correspondence of shelf-related neritic and benthic taxa in boreal (North Sea), Mediterranean and central Paratethyan realms during the middle/late Burdigalian. This likely resulted from the shift and enlargement of warm-temperate/subtropical climate areas to northern latitudes which established similar thermophilic faunal assemblages by dispersion into the North Sea Basin via the eastern Atlantic. However, the lack of the present-day tropical/subtropical genera Ginglymostoma, Isogomphodon, Negaprion, Pseudocarcharias, Pteromylaeus, Rhinoptera and Pristis in the North Sea Basin and their partial presence in the Mediterranean Tethys and Central Paratethys indicates a faunal differentiation in the European Burdigalian which was probably governed by climatic factors. 170 pp. + 101 pls, br. 4. …
