The author was awarded the Military Cross 'for outstanding courage and audacity' during the kidnap. The book was adapted for the 1957 film (U.S title 'Night Ambush') starring Dirk Bogarde as 'Paddy' Leigh Fermor and David Oxley as Moss. Leigh Fermor is often cited as one of the real-life inspirations for secret agent James Bond.
