Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Minor shelf wear; light scuffing to cloth. Else a bright, clean copy. This volume deals with Judaeo-Jerusalem Arabic affected by Jewish socio-religious life, its interrelatedness with non-Jewish Jerusalem Arabic, and its erosion by youths through replacement by Hebrew. The socio-religious life of the Jewish community is first introduced, followed by descriptions of socio-linguistic processes of both dialect varieties, of integrating and discharging foreign borrowings, of lexico-semantic concord and contrast between both dialect varieties, of varieties relating to relative status of interlocutors, and of deteriorating Judaeo-Jerusalem Arabic replaced by modern Hebrew. A dictionary-like Arabic and Hebrew index ends the book. The diachronic and synchronic analyses and description of intricate and interrelated lexico-semantic communal dialectal varieties of Arabic and Hebrew in present-day Jerusalem is a most challenging linguistic achievement hopefully won here. …

Hardcover. Zustand: FINE. Complete in two volumes with continuous pagination: xxiv, 274; 275-541 pp. 8vos, sewn bindings in pale blue cloth with gilt stamped lettering. Both volumes exceedingly clean and fresh with tight bindings and sharp edges. This publication is a most comprehensive, richly-documented dictionary which presents, in local Arabic dialects and in mostly assimilated Judaeo-Yemeni dialects, the natural, geo-political, economic, and socio-cultural history of Muslim Yemen. It is also an account of the religious inter- and intra-socio-cultural and economic everyday life of the ancient Jewish communities who lived as dhimm's under Muslim rule until their mass emigration to Israel in 1948, leaving behind 5,000 co-religionists. The dictionary is based on about 300 printed and ms sources painstakingly consulted in various libraries all over the world, and many Yemeni language informants now residing in Israel. The text of every single item is adduced, mostly in context, with reference to ms., or book, page, line, or note, and to classical and foreign etymologies. Particular attention has been paid to the dictionaries of Lane and Dozy. This is a milestone in Arabic lexicography, complementing Dozy's 'Supplement aux dictionnaires arabes,' and opening up a complete new area sorely missing in the field of Arabic Studies. …
