This is the third edition. "Brown was an enthusiastic angler, and in 1750, at the suggestion of Dr. Johnson, brought out an edition of Walton and Cotton's "Compleat Angler". . . MOSES BROWNE (1704 â" September 1787) was a pen-cutter from Clerkenwell, London, England who became a poet and eventually rose amongst the ranks of the Church of England. He made various contributions to the Gentleman's Magazine, founded by Edward Cave at St. John's Gate in 1731, who awarded Browne several prizes for his contributions. Browne mixed with some distinguished literary figures of his time, including befriending Samuel Johnson. Browne was appointed vicar of Olney, Buckinghamshire in 1753. In 1764, Browne took on the post of Chaplain at Morden College in Blackheath, London. He remained vicar of Olney at the same time as vicar of Sutton, Lincolnshire until his death in 1787. In den Warenkorb8vo, pp. [x], x, 460; with engraved frontispiece (cut round and mounted; small tear in title page, without loss); contemporary calf, spine gilt (spine rubbed, lacks label, upper cover becoming detached). First edition of the author's principal collection of poems. Not a lot is known about the early life of Moses Browne (1704-1787), but for a time as a young man he was reduced to working as a pen-cutter to support a large family. In time he became a contributor to the Gentleman's Magazine, and received the assistance of Edward Cave; Samuel Johnson had the happy notion that Browne should produce a new edition of the Compleat Angler, which proved successful. In time he became a clergyman, and his later verse is on religious themes. His biographer in ODNB remarks that he was 'deservedly popular as a minor poet', and that Southey acknowledged his early contribution to romantic naturalism. This lively volume begins with his Piscatory Eclogues, first published in 1729, of which the fifth is an avowed imitation of Milton's Lycidas. The longest new piece is an ambitious 'Essay on the Universe' (almost a hundred pages long), dedicated to the Countess of Hertford, who became a patron. The volume also includes a poem addressed to Richard Savage, a series of descriptive poems on Scarborough, a group of 'Little Essays on Little Subjects' (written in imitation of Swift's Meditations on a Broom Stick), among which are 'Small-Beer', 'The Shrimp', and 'The Barber', and a jaunty set of verses addressed to Edward Cave, his publisher, on the success of the Gentleman's Magazine. Provenance: early signature of William Davison on pastedown and title page. Foxon p. 93.

In den Warenkorb12mo, engraved portrait frontispiece and pp. xiv, viii, [ii], 240; a little dampstained at the end, else a fine copy, in contemporary unlettered plain calf, gilt fillets on covers and spine. First and apparently only edition. Moses Browne (1704-87) received early patronage from Robert Viscount Molesworth, but the nobleman's death in 1725 deprived him of the advancement he might have expected, and it was only at about this time that he took holy orders, and was given the living of Olney, in Buckinghamshire. He was often absent, especially when he acquired further livings, but his curate at Olney, from about 1764 onwards, was John Newton, whose friend William Cowper moved to the parish; Browne must have known them both, and cannot have been unaware of the publication of their Olney Hymns in 1779. As his biographer in ODNB remarks, Browne was a 'deservedly popular minor poet', and one whose sensibility contributed to romantic naturalism, as Southey himself remarked. Foxon p. 93.
