How'have these -changes affected the-land and people of China? Can lessons from the" past give us insights about the fature? For six years, Robert Moseley lived and worked as a conservation scientist in the mountains of northwest Yunnan Province. As part of that work, he set out to answer these questions and apply the results to the conservation of nature and culture. Northwest Yunnan provides a compelling backdrop to explore these issues, with its Spectacular mountain environment and diverse ethnic cultures that were once remote, but are now confronted with unprecedented rates of change. Following in the footsteps of early twentieth century explorer-photagraphers Moseley and colleagues traveled extensively through this region rephotographing_ original scenes and comparing them with modern conditions. In Revisiting Shangri-La, he uses this collection- of: repeated photographs. as a powerful visual tool to portray the dynamic and resilient' charatter of people and the land and to communicate future opportunities for conservation. Bob Moseley has spent most of his life mountains around the worid for both work and fun. He began his conservation career in the Rocky Mountains of idaho where he worked for 25 years cataloging, the state's biological diversity and designing conservation programs to sustain it. He then moved to the mountains of Yunnan, China, working for nearly six years as a scientist for The Nature Conservancy's China program. Bob's first book was Alpine Wildflowers of the Rocky Mountains, coauthored with Joe Duft. More recently he compiled the Rock Climbing Guide to Yunnan with Wang Bin and Wang ziming. Bob received the Yungan Friendship Award from the People's Republic of Chisa and the Partners in Conservation Award from the U.S. Department of the interior, Bob currently directs conservation programs for Tne Nature Conservancy in Illinois, where tallgrass prairies and big rivers are the focus of his work.
