Sadly bound without the six folding maps, with evidence of their removal. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally with shelf wear, bumped to head and tail of spine and extremities, spine laid down, cockled. Internally, binding generally firm. Minor spotting scattered to leaves. Good. book.

Bound in green cloth covered hard boards, gilt lettering to spine and gilt decoration to spine and upper board. Numerous b/w plate illustrations from photographs throughout the book. Previous owner's decorative bookplate to the front paste-down. Interesting account by two British Officers of the Gurkha Regiment who were stationed in Nepal in the 1920 s. In Very Good condition, a little fade to the cloth spine and top 3cm of the upper board.

[6] + 28pp., 12mo. In coloured illustrative wraps. Morris's illustrations are light and fresh, the first being a caricature of 'the enemy': a sour-looking bespectacled Japanese army officer. The first section, which it illustrates, is on 'Security' and concludes: 'Remember that in disposing of household effects, releasing servants from employment, etc., you may easily give away too much information. Be guarded; it is YOUR life too that is in danger this time.' The volume is entertainingly-written, and paints a vivid picture of the logistical niceties facing the British armed forces at the end of the war. One piece of advice, illustrated with another Morris cartoon, is: 'If you have a "double-barrelled" name, sink your pride and use one name only. You will not enjoy searching amongst piles of Baggage under two letters in the Customs Sheds on your arrival.' The pamphlet is divided into four sections: Preparations; Movement to the Port; Embarkation and the Voyage; Arrival in the United Kingdom. Subsections include: 'Vaccination Certificate', 'Pre-Censorship', 'Pets', 'Despatches from Stations in India', 'Clothing Coupons' and 'Ration Cards'. Scarce: no copy on COPAC or OCLC.

Barnes, born in 1850 to a seafaring family in Newfoundland, spent most of his life as a sailor in one capacity or another, from the era of wind-powered sailing to modern steamships. A natural raconteur, who kept copious notebooks, his story was put into book form with the aid of his editor and dedicatee who, in addition to using Barnes's written diaries, recorded him on wax cylinders in order to better preserve the quality of his storytelling voice. The more common London edition, published by Cassell in 1931, omits her credit. This edition, further, is illustrated with fine wood engravings by Francis Shields. Exceptionally scarce in dust jacket. Fine in a very lightly rubbed dust jacket, trace of a small circular label removed from the spine and just a touch of wear at the upper edge.
