Soft cover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. English and Japanese text.; Paperback., 24 x 21.7 cm.; 0.5 kg.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The exterior shows edge wear, scuffs and scratches. Small bumps at the top and bottom of the spine. The bottom of the spine is slightly scuffed. Interior with minor signs of wear. Includes a loose Japanese text page at the end which doesn't belong to the book.; Catalogue from an exhibition held at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston from October 17, 1888 - January 15, 1989.; "In 1982, the Museum of Fine Arts celebrated the reopening of its newly reinstalled Asiatic wing with a spectacular exhibition of the works of the so-called Living National Treasures of Japan. In November of that year, one of the Living National Treasures, the most famous, most honored and highly acclaimed swordsmith in Japan, Sadaichi Gassan, came to Boston and, in a specially constructed foundry in a courtyard of the Museum, demonstrated with his son Sadatoshi and three of his other students - the traditional ritual and method of swordmaking. Swordsmithing, like all traditional Japanese crafts, requires superior skill, vast experience, and enormous patience. A great Japanese sword, often the most highly prized household treasure in a Japanese family, is gradually formed of some 30,000 layers of iron. Gassan is a fourth generation swordsmith, though his technique can be traced back to the 13th century. One of the swords begun by Gassan in Boston in 1982 was taken back to Nara to be finished. It has been completed only now, six years later, and is one of Gassan's masterpieces. To our great delight, Master Gassan has donated to the Museum this great sword as well as a beautiful sword by his son, Sadatoshi, and also a dagger by his father, completing the Museum's holdings of the Gassan school. To say that the Museum of Fine Arts, holder of the largest Japanese sword collection outside Japan, welcomes these superlative gifts is an under-statement. The present exhibition, which places these swords in the context of the Gassan School, commemorates the donations and the immense contribution of Sadaichi Gassan to our Museum. In anticipation of this exhibition, five of the other swords in the show were sent to Japan to be expertly polished during the past year. This procedure was made possible by the Morihiro Ogawa Fund, in memory of Dr. Kanzan Sato. This exhibition and catalogue are the result of the expertise of Morihiro Ogawa, Fellow for Research in Japanese Arms and Armor at the MFA, and the curator in charge of the 1982 exhibition, Living National Treasures.". foreword by Alan Shestack, director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Good condition overall.; Catalogue from the exhibition exhibition Samourai: Armure du Guerrier (Samurai: Armor of the Warrior) held at Musée du quai Branly, Paris, November 8, 2011 through January 29, 2012; Musée de la civilisation, Québec, April 4, 2012 through January 27, 2013.; Elements of Japanese armor are often stunning works of art created by master craftsmen of extraordinary skill and imagination. In particular, the rich combination of material and techniques involved in the production of yoroi (armor) and kabuto (helmets) finds no counterpart in other areas of the world. Yet, the importance of this unique art form has largely remained undiscovered in the West. This book introduces the samurai armor collection of the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller family to the public for the first time. Built over the past twenty-five years and one of the largest of its kind in the world, the Ann and Gabriel Barbier- Mueller collection consists of several hundred objects that dis- play strong sculptural qualities. Included are suits of armor, helmets, masks, and horse armor, dating from the twelfth to the nineteenth century. Many are considered masterpieces. The selected works will be showcased in the traveling exhibition, Samurai: Armor of the Warrior, scheduled to open at the Musée du quai Branly, Paris, in November 2011, and at the Musée de la civilisation, Québec, in April 2012. Essays written by a group of scholars and specialists provide a sociohistorical context for the objects and invite the reader to have an exciting look into the world of the samurai. Morihiro Ogawa, Special Consultant for Japanese Arms and Armor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, gives an overview on the development and construction of samurai armor. Additional contributions by leading experts cover a wide range of topics such as the development of samurai culture, the roles of women, castle architecture, horse armor, changing warfare, and bushido (the way of the warrior). The in-depth discussions of these themes further contemporary knowledge of samurai culture. The catalog following the essays features one hundred and twenty works of art from the collection accompanied by detailed descriptions. The objects represent the astounding variety of stylistic and technical approaches used by Japanese armor craftsmen. Readers of varied backgrounds will enjoy the dazzling beauty of the armor while gaining a fuller understanding of this dynamic cultural expression.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 359 pages : colour illustrations ; 32 cm. Summary:"This extraordinary publication presents, for the first time, the samurai armor collection of the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum in Dallas. The Barbier-Mueller has selectively amassed these pieces of armor over the past twenty-five years, ultimately forming one of the largest and most important collections of its kind in the world. It is composed of nearly three hundred objects, several of which are considered masterpieces, including suits of armor, helmets, masks, horse armor, and weaponry. The objects date from the 12th to the 19th century, with a particularly strong focus on Edo-period armor. Offering an exciting look into the world of the samurai warrior, the book begins with an introduction by Morihiro Ogawa. Essays by prominent scholars inthe field highlight topics such as the phenomenon of the warrior in Japan, the development of the samurai helmet, castle architecture, women in samurai culture, and Japanese horse armor. The book's final section consists of an extensive catalogue of objects, concentrating on 120 significant works in the collection. Lavishly illustrated in full color, each object is accompanied by an entry written by a scholar of Japanese armor.".
