Signed and inscribed by George Blacker Morgan to Sir Charles Wakefield (then Baron of Sal…twood and Lord Mayor of London, but later Viscount Wakefield of Hythe). 8vo. Boards worn and rubbed at edges, discoloured and marked, pushed at spine ends. Endpaper and prelims have light foxing, pages browned at edges else internally neat, clean and tidy. This is a scholarly work examining the anonymous 1605 letter to Lord Monteagle waring him not to attend the State Opening of Parliament on 5 November that year. The letter was a key factor in uncovering the Gunpowder Plot - the conspiracy to blow up the House of Lords and assassinate king James I. It analyses tehe handwriting and identifes the author as William Vavsour, an associate of Francis Tresham. Sir Charles Wakefield was a Liverpool entrepreneur, founder of the Britis oil company, Castrol, who served as Lord Mayor of London from 1915-16).
