Evidently responding to a request for an autograph, Adams has written out his name and pseudonym in fine style, with flourish dividing signature from pseudonym: 'William T Adams / "Oliver Optic"'. The recipient Philip Dosse (often addressed, as in this letter, as 'Dossé') was proprietor of Hansom Books, publisher of a stable of seven arts magazines including Books and Bookmen and Plays and Players. See 'Death of a Bookman' by the novelist Sally Emerson (editor of 'Books and Bookmen' at the… time of Dosse's suicide), in Standpoint magazine, October 2018. 1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Large and ebullient signature in red felt-tip pen. After thanking him for his 'sweet letter and all the nice things you say', she continues: 'I was so touched that you liked my speech and what you told me about the review of Lord Mountbatten's book.' Meeting Dosse was 'lovely', and she thinks that Books and Bookmen is 'absolutely brilliant and I enjoy every word of it'. She ends in the hope that Dosse will one day 'come down here for lunch, my sons are always here on Sundays'.

The first letter, and probably the second, were written around the time when his 'Down the Garden Path' (1932) and its two sequels had made Nichols wildly popular, eliciting several parodies. ONE (TLS to 'Mr. Bryon'): 1p, 12mo. Discoloration along top part of outer edge, otherwise in good conditi…on. Folded once. Good clear signature 'Beverley Nichols'. He thanks him for sending the interview. 'I think it is admirably written, and expresses my views very clearly.' TWO (conclusion of TLS): 1p, 12mo. Twenty-nine lines of text. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once. Smaller signature 'Beverley Nichols', but still good and clear. The letter starts while Nichols is in the process of giving a tongue-in-cheek description of the volume of his correspondence: '[.] band at a quiet hotel and arrange for free seats for three theatres. / 3. Three letters from parents who have genius sons who, however, are unable to find employment. Will I kindly see to this? / 4. Eight requests to speak on Disarmament, at towns varying from Edinburgh to Penzance. / 5. Two unsolicted novels, four unsolicited sonnets, and a letter of 78 pages from a lunatic in South Africa, enclosing a large number of photographs of General Smutts.' He complains that he cannot continue, having only 'touched the fringe of my mail', with 'a pile of similar letters a foot high waiting to be answered'. The letter concludes: 'Now do you understand why authors leave the country? Or hide in caves? Or commit suicide? And do you also understand why your own charming letter was such a relief?'.

The recipient is not named and the letter begins: 'My dear, | I am horrified to find I have made some awful mistake in my diary & am at the Foyle lunch… on Wednesday to stand in for someone else who may not turn up, so I can't break with it. I could cry, for I feel that I have let you down & so wanted to see you to hear how you really are'. She is 'worried to death' about the recipient's sight. The matter is 'ghastly' and she is 'really dreadfully worried'. She asks to be allowed to visit 'or something', as she feels 'very very deeply about this', and the recipient is 'so brave'. She signs off: 'My love. | Ursula'.
A Book of Heroes and Heroines
Manning-Sanders, Ruth [1888-1988] Illustrated by Robin Jacques (27 March 1920, London, England - 18 March 1995). An illustrator whose work was published in more than 100 novels and children's books. He is notable for his long collaboration with Ruth Manning-Sanders, illustrating many of her collections of fairy tales from all over the world. In much of his work, Jacques employed the stippling technique.

Eventually the family settled down into a cottage at Land's End, Cornwall. Author Walter de la Mare took at least one holiday to the Manning-Sanders residence in Cornwall. Unread and unused new book. Dust wrapper supplied in archive acetate film protection, this protects and prolongs the life of the paper, it is not adhered to the book or to the dust wrapper.
