Quando Valentino Bompiani decise di rilanciare l'«Almanacco» da cui la sua avventura era partita circa quarant'anni prima, Bruno Munari fu subito della partita: nei primi quattro volumi 1959-1961 il suo contributo riguarda il disegno di copertina e il progetto grafico interno; dal volume 1963 al 1967, oltre alla copertina, quella munariana è una presenza fissa tra i contributori e i disegnatori delle pagine reclamistiche (di Munari i cataloghi natalizi Einaudi e le réclame del Club degli Editori); fino al volume 1970 rimangono sue le copertine, mentre nel decennio successivo Munari collabora specialmente ai volumi 1972 (copertina e design con Aurelia Raffo) e 1977 (il numero retrospettivo sugli «Almanacchi», di cui disegna la copertina e torna contributore di rilievo), mentre si limita alle copertine nei volumi 1973, 1974 e 1976. Gli ultimi tre almanacchi sono disegnati da Salvatore Gregorietti. -- Dopo il numero d'esordio, curato come ai vecchi tempi da Bompiani e Zavattini, la curatela dei primi sei volumi è affidata a Sergio Morando, sostituito da Giancarlo Bonacina nei volumi 1967-1970, quelli più aperti ai pensatori della neoavanguardia e dintorni, con Calvino, Colombo, Manganelli, Pagliarani, Sottsass, Lea Vergine. Seguirono due volumi "di passaggio" con curatela diffusa (ma spiccano i nomi di Accame ed Eco), quindi la nuova gestione seguita alla cessione dell'editrice da Valentino Bompiani al gruppo RCS: i volumi 1973-1977 sono curati da Rita Cirio e Pietro Favari, quelli dal 1978 al 1980 da Lietta Tornabuoni. La peculiarità della nuova serie dell'«Almanacco» fu quella di trovare un tema monografico per ciascun numero: a prescindere dagli esiti non sempre all'altezza, la ricerca fu costantemente orientata alla più urgente e provocatoria attualità culturale, con «le letterature meno note» (1961), il seminale volume del 1962 dedicato ai rapporti tra scienze umane e computer (con il «Tape Mark I» di Balestrini e l'«Arte programmata» curata da Munari), il volume del 1969 con «I seminaristi» fotografati da Giacomelli, quello del 1971 sulla contestazione giovanile, quello del 1972 sulla nuova teoria della letteratura tra Eco e Barthes, e infine i numeri più "visuali" della direzione Cirio/Favari e quelli "femministi" della direzione Tornabuoni, tra i quali il «Corpo a corpo» del 1979 curato assieme a Natalia Aspesi, tra erotismo, pornografia e violenza.
