About the book >.>.> Birmingham, 'city of a thousand trades' and heart of the West Midlands, was in no hurry to embrace the coming of the railway. When it did, however, it was certainly in style with four railway companies competing in the early years for routes into the city, namely the Grand Junction Railway (1837); London & Birmingham Railway (1838); Birmingham & Gloucester Railway (1841) and the Birmingham & Derby Junction Railway (1842). The first train to arrive in Birmingham, in 1837, came from Liverpool on the newly laid track of the Grand Junction Railway, to their temporary terminus at Vauxhall. However, a much grander terminal was planned for Birmingham and in 1838 the London & Birmingham Railway completed its line from Euston to the new station in Curzon Street. The impressive entrance building is a listed structure and stands today almost as it was when built.
